chains...let's talk about them.

So, I just replaced the chain and sprockets on my '98 t595. I used an original Triumph chain (DID 530). I don't have a rivet tool so I tack welded the master link plate onto the pins...rather than mushrooming the pins to hold the plate on. It was just a quick tack weld, not generating a whole lot of heat. My only concern is the rubber o-rings under the link plate.

...has anyone ever tried this method??

this method

You mean trying something and then asking the experts? Yes, once or twice...

Sorry about the complete lack of useful information; I can't help myself.

Actually, did you make sure the roller still rolls around the pin? Does everything still bend the way it should? You can see the edges of the o-rings between the plates; do they look okay?

Thumbs up so far so good...

Yeah. The o-rings look like all the others...and the chain bends as it should. There is no binding at the welded link.

Never tried it and never heard of anyone else who has either.

I'd keep a close eye on it and check there's no sign of the weld breaking away at regular, frequent intervals

Good luck!

Keep in mind that a chain is only as strong as the weakest link. Heating metal up to the temps that are necessary to weld it can change the properties of the metal. I'm not saying that is won't work but it might snap on you, at some point.

As was said before, Just keep an eye on it. A 530 is a pretty beefy chain, so you might be alright...

I wouldn't trust that method. There is a strong probability that those tack welds could crack and the plate could work loose. Buy a new link and use the conventional method.

Just out of curiosity, why didn't you just use a clip style master link instead of taking a chance with the whole tack weld thing? I have been buying original Triumph chains for my '97 and just use the clip link. BTW, my owner's manual says (and this is what my Triumph dealer sells as the OE fitment) the original chain is a Regina, not DID. These come with both rivet and clip masters.

Same as the ^^ other Wally...I've used master links instead of rivet links on every chain I ever replaced. No problems at all...I even asked my trusty service manager about it and he said he's hardly ever (as in 3-4) seen one break in over 20 years in the business.

masterlinks

I've heard many stories (from this site as well) of masterlink clips coming loose even if installed properly...

I always hear people cautions others about this, yet it's never happened to me and I don't personally know anyone else that it has happened to. I always hear it said as "My brother-in-laws, cousin's, husband's, nephew Billy-Bob had one break once!"

I'm convinced it's a urban legend...
