CEL OBD II Codes

Been searching all morning for the OBD codes that jive with the 2000 955. I have come up with nothing other than what the computer I borrowed from Advance auto gave me. I am 2-3.5 hrs from a dealer and afraid to let them work on my bike (i.e. rob me blind!) Anyone have any input as to the following codes? I read that they stay in the bike for like 40-60 days after the light goes out? So, I'm thinking maybe some of these are old sense I have done quite a bit of work to the machine? Codes:

P0230 - Fuel Pump Primary Circuit Malfunction
P1231 - Manuf. Control Fuel/Air Metering
P0113 - IAT Sensor 1 Circuit High Input
P0352 - Ignition Coil B Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
P1352 - Manufacturer Control Ignition System or Misfire

The bike was bought from a dude who let it sit for two and a half years! I replenished and flushed all fluids, new tires, new fuel pump, battery, etc. Only thing out of the ordinary was the removal of the CA Emissions stuff. Maybe these are some old and some simple mistakes that I can fix?! Please be honest but be gentle I am now officially terrified that the stealer is about to acquire some big money from me and have my bike for two weeks!?

Thanks guys!

Hey Fly,

Pulled my triumph shop manual out and the CEL codes are somewhat different than what you are getting from your code reader. These are the factory definitions and make more sense. If you clear the codes with a reader, they are gone. Codes in the system should triger the CEL light.

P0230 - fuel pump relay fault
P1231 - fuel pump relay open circuit
P0113 - intake air temperature to low
P0352 - ignition coil 2 malfunction
P1352 - ignition coil 2 open circuit/short circuit to ground

That being said I am not a mechanic but it appears to be a fault with the fuel pump and one of the coils (duh Does the bike run even with these codes present? If the bike runs, I would look at clearing the codes with your ODBII scanner and then see if the same ones come back. From the codes it appears that the fuel pump relay is sticking open. I had that happen once with the headlight relay. It is possible to disassemble and clean them with a file. Otherwise, a relay is fairly cheap. As for the coil, make sure it is seated properly and all the wiring looks good. If it isn't that simple, you may have to take it to a dealer or gamble and just start replacing parts. If you have been wrenching on it, any disruption in the system will trigger a code.

The intake air temperature code seems odd. Don't know what that would mean

Thanks...wimp mode?

Xactoman...thanks a mil man! Will clearing the codes also get the bike out of "wimp mode"? Also do you the think the ign. coil #2 is triggered from me replacing all the spark plugs?

Thanks again!

Not sure what "wimp mode" is. I don't have that much experience with ODB2 systems. It might just be running on 2 cylinders.

If you have been wrenching on the bike, changing plugs, changing fuel pump etc. I would almost be certain that something isn't connected correctly or something got damaged. I believe there is a temp sensor in/by the air box that could also trigger that other code. Since these codes are showing a short circuit, take everything apart and make sure you didn't pinch any wires or damage anything. If you turned the bike on without everything connected it would also generate the codes.

Yes, the ignition coil 2 fault could be from the spark plug replacement.

'wimp mode'

Yeah sorry about that I was being a smart ass...wimp mode = limp mode. Now that you mention it there was a lot of disconnecting electrical gizmos and sensors so I'm betting you are spot on. I also imagine the starter fluid did wonders for that sensor in the air box?! Whoops. Think that bad boy needs replacing?

I'm out of town right now so as soon as I get home and get some time this week I'll be wrenching away and let you know how it works out. Figure once I think I've got it all cleaned up I'll get them to remove the codes and see which ones reappear and go from there?

Thanks again and ride safe!

Many thanks!

Tore it down one last time <knocks on wood> and check my #2 and the spring that strikes the terminal was slightly bent and the electrical connector at the top of the coil was disconnected (probably from wrestling with the air box). As for the fuel codes no clue all was hooked up as advertised. Finally the IAT was unplugged b/c someone forgot to install the safety clip....hmm..me?? Long story I know, but I just wanted to let you know that thanks to you I had a blast this evening! Thanks again Xacto!

Cheers and ride safe!

excellent! It is always good to check your work. Glad that things were simple and you didn't have to pay for anything serious.

good luck and keep the round on the ground.
