Engine Light

All,

I know there have been a number of posts on this subject (Engine Light On) but I wanted to get your feel for my situation.

I started my bike, let it idle until it was up to temp, and started down the road. My hands were a bit chilly in the morning air, so I went back home (5 min ride) to get gloves. Turned the bike off, got my gloves, went back out and tried to start the bike. I hit the starter and when it sounded like it was going to start I took my finger off it. As the engine did not start, I hit the starter again and the bike fired right up… but the engine light was on.

My bike is on its second tank of gas for the year (it’s been cold up here) and was stored for 7 months before that. I did use Stable (a product to put in your gas if it is going to be stored for a long time) and has been running fine since I pulled it out of storage.

I did notice that many people have had issues with a tank that is too full, that shouldn’t be my problem as I Think I’m down to a half a tank right now. A low battery seems to be the other common issue, which I think could be my problem. (I have been having the problem of my spedo reporting 0 mph, which only happens when my battery is running low).

My question is, the most common suggestion is that I let the bike run through 3 heat cycles and see if the light goes away. Is there anything that could cause that light to go on that would be a big problem through three starts? One of my biggest concerns is I don’t have a good way to get my bike to a dealer without riding it, so if there could be a big issue I don’t want to do anything to make it worse before I can get an appt with a dealer.

Thanks for the help,
Steve

It's really impossible to say without pulling the code Steve.
But your battery volts sounds like a good candidate especially since you get the '0' speedo issue.
Note that you can have a new tune loaded that will eliminate your speedo check error.

Any OBDII code reader can pull your codes. You can buy one from pep boys for $60-$100.

I think I'm going to get an OBDII scanner, thanks for the input!

As for the current situation, I did the 3 starts and the light went out so for now I'm ok.

Thanks all,
Steve

May be a dumb question but, where is the connector that you use to hook up the scan tool?

The connector can be reached by removing the rear seat. It is easier to find and connect if you remove the front seat.

Honestly, I get the check engine light often. I never had the spedo issue but I am sure it has something to do with my PowerCommander. I can be driving along and it just pops on. It goes away after a few cycles and turns back on out of nowhere.

Depends on the codes that keep popping up. If you're bike was originally equipped with secondary air or if you've changed some stuff, maybe...

If you're curious, again, any OBDII code reader will tell you what codes are popping up.

The connector is under the front seat, usually (as Pinballer said). It has a shiny rubber insulator that goes around it to protect the connector. There is only one connector under the seat that will fit the OBDII interface...
