Daytona Super III Wanted
Hello RAT readers,
I've digested just about everything there is to digest on these pages over the last couple of weeks about 90's Daytonas with an eye to finally buying a Super III. I toyed with the idea of getting a 1200se for a while, but feel the running costs would be too high for me to comfortably handle, especially with fuel prices rising like they are at the moment. I've read all the posts I can find about Super IIIs and know there are a couple to be had in the UK right now, including what's likely to be a breaker, but they seem to be a bit scabby and over-priced and likely to be in need of a major engine sevice looking at their mileages, but there must be some around in decent order that folks want to sell. I don't feel that increasing age means that bikes should necessarily be rough; the '91 VFR I've had for the last 6 years has 44k on the clock and looks a treat. So I'd like to find something tidy that has been properly serviced (even if that was by a home mechanic - as that's what I do too) where a tatty condition isn't being blamed simply on the bike getting on a bit. Any help would be gratefully received. The sooner I get get aboard British wheels the better.
Thanks
Nathan.

I've had mine for 10 yrs now,its been a great bike. Not done a lot of miles,26k,but touch wood,no probs. The build quality is really good,on par at least with Honda? Great all-round bike,50+mpg possible (thats what I averaged on a trip to France last Sept).Only thing i can say is if you find one (sorry, mines not for sale)check there is no starter clutch issues, and valves have been checked(poor starting from cold if not)Just had mine re-shimed,bike is running better than ever.Otherwise, pretty bulletproof, and quite a quick, solid bike.Nice looker too. I think Triumph's are the TVR's of the bike world, but more reliable. Good luck.

Nathan, If the posts you read about having problems with a Super III were the posts written by me, do not use those to judge the reliability of these bikes. Mine is not the norm as it was heavily modified prior to my purchase.
The engine in these bikes can reach very high mileage figures with nothing more than regular maintenance. There are several high mileage bike owners hanging around this site. hopefully, they will chime in.

Urban Peasant,
I found you a Super III! But wait, there's a problem. It's in California. I don't want to make a grown man cry, but check out this yellow one with 3,600 miles and looks spotless.
http://sacramento.craigslist.org/mcy/667314022.html
There is another like it in Georgia with 5,500 miles, Corbin seat, jet kit, bars, and new tires. I won't give you the link because one blow to the gut is enough. If I see one listed in the U.K I will let you know. However, with the dollar so weak, why not come on over and buy what you want - half of Europe seems to be doing it
OK, I'm doing it anyway. Here is a link to the Georgia bike:

Darn, there must be something in the UK Only see a 1200 on the U.K Ebay. B-T-W, your plea for a Super III comes up on google, so maybe someone will contact you with a bike for sale.
Aha, another yellow one (are they ALL yellow?) for sale in Holland. That is just across the channel. 39,000km (24,000 miles). Looks clean. Here is the link (is is such a long link, I hope this works). If it doesn't, this is the web site: www.motor-brommer.marktplaats.nl

Good luck.

Belive I found one with minimal damage ( 1 bent lever) even saw the photos , but can I get back to the images on their website ...no chance
I was looking for a 1200 SE , which JohnD found for me, fairly sure the D III was at Cheshire Motorcycle Breakers.
Suggest you give them a call...

Evening folks,
Thanks for the replies so far.
John D - I've contacted the guy in Holland and hope to hear back from him soon. My Dad has brought several classic bikes back from the Continent over the years (most recently a BMW R5 - 1933 I think, one of 2 in the UK) so that might be a winner.
Prainer, thanks for the Cheshire Salvage one. I intend to head over in their direction next Saturday so see what the damage is really like. I don't particularly want to buy something that's been stuffed though. Who knows what might be wrong with that bike. But I'll certainly give it a look as it's not far away.
Hinkley, no you didn't put me off at all, I realise your bike was heavily modded. In fact I'd spoken to On Yer Triumph and Eddy Wright Leeds about Super IIIs and both they said a serviced engine is good for 90-100K miles. I did very carefully read the posts of Dave94Super3 though, and it seems his bike, for sale for over 6 months now, hasn't been looked after and has been in need of engine work for some time now. Tht may be an unfair assumption, but I can only go off what I read.
Threepot, I think it was one of your posts that told me that fuel economy was at least half decent with these 900s. I'd read that a good day on 1200 would give you 35mpg. From 2 wheels, that hurts!
I have read several times and been told that old Triumphs can be hard to sell - that's not going to be a concern of mine as I don't plan on selling. I'm after a distinctive, British, limited-run bike and I've long-wanted a Triumph and the Super III will fit my bill nicely.
Cheers for now fellas.
Nathan.

Daytona for you?
I have a 91 Daytona Sport which is in fantastic conditions and less than 20,000 miles. Lots of history as well and rides lovely. It's not a 1200 Supersport but is a great second choice.

Thanks for the heads-up Richard, but it's the 900 Super III '94/5/6 that I'm after, anything else just isn't the same animal.
