Engine Running Weird...

My bike has been sitting at home for a few weeks (on the battery tender) and I decided to commute it to work today. On the way in, it seemed fine. No problems to speak of...

I went home for lunch to check on my dog that just had an operation a few days ago and I stopped to grab some lunch. When I was leaving the restaurant, it didn't want to start. I finally got it to kick over but then, on my way back in to the office, it started to sputter and miss on 1 cylinder.

It's weird, it comes and goes. Sometimes it will idle fine, then it will get rough, I'll stab the throttle a little and it will be smooth out. When I stop at lights it will start to idle rough after a few seconds.

Any speculation on what this could be?

Did you check your battery connections? Mine had the similar symptoms and ended up being the battery terminals were loose.

I'll check.

I did have to mess with the Battery to put the battery tender on...

A tankful of Techron fuel additive seems to clean them out as well.

This particular type seems to work better than others and I run some in a tank around every 10,000Kms followed shortly after by an oil change.

In Australia, you can get this under the Caltex brand. Hard to find outside of a Caltex Service Station.

I think that in the US, it's generally available, even in WalMart.

...funny you should mention that.

It came back.

Can the crank sensor fail without tripping the check engine light? Aside from the bad performance, I've got no other indication.

Mine did....If I remember correctly, no CEL...I happened to just have a crank pos. sensor in my extra motor and it worked.

I haven't even looked at the manual...

Is it hard to replace?
