What Chain??

I don't understand Motorcycle chains? I see 520DID, 530 xring, etc.

Can I buy a chain for my Daytona from any source besides the Triumph dealer? If so what do I buy? Also is it really required to change both gears even if no visible wear is seen on those?

You can buy chain at any motorcycle dealer, should be 530 for a 955i unless the sprockets have been changed. I don't change sprockets until I see some wear but there are many who feel it is better to change the whole works as a set. You will need a chain tool, breaker to get your old one off and a riveter to install the new one. Stock length is about 110 links if I remember correctly so I usually buy a 120 link chain and cut to length.DID is good chain, RK is good, seems to me I've heard some gripes about Regina.

Thanks. I've also found there to be non-oring, oring, and xring chains available. Then theres the reported tensile strength. Chains range from $30 all the way to $250. Any advice there?

x-ring is supposed to be the best, I think I usually spend about $150.00 on a chain. Wouldn't even hurt to check online for comparison pricing. Being in the US you could have it in your hands in a couple days from a place like Dennis Kirk or Bike Bandit.

I was going through the exact same dillema. I got a 530RK 110 link xring chain(I only needed 104links) with snap on master link(no tool)....I cannot remember the exact price or model but I think it was about $110...I just look at tensil strength and price....My friend has a 250hp busa(320hp with NOS) and runs the RK ZZZ so I figure I dont need anything close to that strong....

It's not recommended to use spring links on powerfull road bikes. There should also be a soft link for rivetting - use that.

I just finished replacing the chain and sprockets on my Suzuki RF900R. I got my parts from the Sprocket Center <http://www.sprocketcenter.com/>. The 02 Daytona w/ SSSA uses a DID 530 X-Ring chain, 106 links, 18/42 sprockets (according to the manual). The Sprocket Center sells complete sets, or you can just buy the chain alone. It is recommended that the chain and sprockets be replaced as a set, but I can't vouch for doing so or not from personal experience. Anyway, just wanted to share my good experience with the Sprocket Center. I had it at my door in two days, DID Gold 530 X-Ring chain with rivet type master link and a new sprocket set. The sprockets appear to be good quality, and the price was the best that I found.

"Powerful road bikes" hehe....

Oh, and if the sprockets look ok, they are fine...You will be able to easily tell if you need new ones...

MEASURE the length of the existing chain - do a web search on how to do that

THAT will tell you if the chain is streatched enough to warrant replacing the sprockets too
