Daytona T595 (955) Alternator

Hello all,

I'm a new Triumph owner. After borrowing my friends 955 Speed Triple i found a 1997 Daytona T595 of my own and loved it. Unfortunately after a few days of owning the bike the battery died. After recharging the battery the bike ran fine. But a few days later bike died out on the highway. Mechanic told me the alternator will need complete replacement because brushes were fried. Has anyone had similar problems? It would seem to me that the alternator parts could be replace by someone who knows what they are doing. Pretty much every part to the alternator is available on bikebandit. My 2 bigger questions: 1) does anybody know what year and models of the 955 engine alternator are interchangeable with my bike; & 2) is this a problem that the previous owner most likely had knowledge of (he owned the bike for a year and only put a little over 1000 miles on it--coincidence?)?

thanks...

Maybe, maybe not. Doesn't really matter as it's a they said/we said argument. Installing new brushes isn't too difficult. I used dental floss to retain the brushes during reassembly.

Seems typical of the modern "mechanic" who don't repair anything but are just parts fitters. Don't seee why you can't repair the unit - or even take it to an auto electric shop who can repair & bench test for you.
Essentially any 97-01 S3 or Daytona alternator will be interchangable if you decide to go that route. You could also use Bike Bandit to validate this & check for other models. After 01, subsequent triples used a stator plus separate rectifier/regulator arrangement as opposed to your integrated automotive style alernator.

Thanks for the responses. I've talked to a few different shops and was told the part is not rebuildable. However, there is a specialist that works on magnetic and is willing to take a look at the alternator. My local shop doesn't see a problem with a rebuilt alternator. But a shop in Phoenix tried telling me I'm better off finding an entire alternator on ebay or craigs. Anybody have opinions on whether testing out a rebuild alternator will cause damage to my bike (e.g. battery, rectifier, ect.) Thanks.
