The Search Continues

Well while I was humming and hawing some lucky sob snatched up the only reasonably priced Daytona I have found. Not many of them near me thats for sure. And the ones I do find are priced out to lunch. Its got me thinking Sprint st. Done a lot of edumacating myself on that bike and really how could a guy go wrong? 6k for a 30k 03 daytona or shake the money tree and move to a Sprint? Found a couple non current 06 for 10999.00 but the guy still hasnt got back after several calls and e-mails whats with that. 07 12999.00 08 are 13999.00 + our 5% gst tax. Looked into bringing one from across the border but mine as well bank on at least 1000.00 to 1300.00 freight and then 300.00 to 500.0 fees.
Plus according to the sales dude new triumphs from the us brought into Canada can not be registered ? Anyone know anything about this?
regardless the Sprint ST looks like it might sneek in there as the bike to have and cover all the bases with. After all Im no Rossi and really do I need to trying to drag my knee anymore? On a brighter note I picked up a 99 speed triple that was marked as non-repairable write off, but the there is nothing wrong with it it is driveable as it sits. Now to figure out what to do with that? Track bike? Hmmmmmmm Knee dragging is it possible ??? Things look brighter and brighter !!!!! Now if I could only get the wife to see it my way!!

Why not buy a salvage frame on eBay for $200 and move the Speedy parts over to it. Heck, you could mount some Daytona bodywork, lighting and clipons and still not spend $1000.

Taking bikes across borders with the intent of registering in a foreign country can be a challenge.

The "right" way would be to purchase a bike in the US-then go through the import process. You'll pay taxes, file paperwork, etc. This could end up being less costly than purchasing in your country, it might not.

The "other" way could involve buying the bike near the US border and having the owner ride across the border for you. Buy a junked bike with straight frame and clean title and then regster in your home country. Not that I condone this, but for the sake of convesation. The difficult part would be actually getting the bike across the border. I don't believe that you could simply buy a used bike in the US complete with US plates, flash a Canadian passport, and ride across the border.

A quick google search of "how to import a motorcycle into Canada" turns up quite a few resources. http://ronh2005.googlepages.com/howtoimportamotorcycle

I don't get it....

They really don't hold their value as well down here.

Would it be hard to bring one across the border?

Fivehundo,
I think the value and pricing is just supply and demand. The US is a major bike market, companies can afford to sell bikes at smaller margins due to large demand. As such, mew bikes in non-US countries where demand is lower, are typically sold at higher prices than the US. Vis a vis the resale is higher.

Bwally,
http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/mj/import.htm has some info on importing cars into into Canada. Figure 6.1% duty tax and a 7% GST tax to bring a vehicle into Canada. Under these conditions a $4k motorcycle purchased in the US would require another $500 in Canadian taxes. It still sounds cheaper than buying locally.

TY researchrat. I am looking into the website you gave me earlier.
Supply and demand definitely has a part to play in it. But from what I heard and I dont have any info to back this up but. For example California has just about as many people as all of Canada and they definitely sell more bikes in California than they do in all of Canada.
That being said. I was told that Canadian triumphs are shipped and purchased through US Triumph distributor. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Here say no doubt.
The other thing I have heard is that because of the price differential between Canada and the US there is an agreement in place that would prohibit registering the the Triumph in Canada as well as warranty issues. Rumor? I don't know.
Had a little chat with the owner of a small Yamaha dealership and he told me he had to refuse warranty work because he could not locate his VIN in the Yamaha system in order to process the warranty work , so for fear of not getting paid for the work he had to turn the guy away. I definately believe in supporting local business whenever possible but I work hard for the pennies and Im not going to give them away just because. Service convience etc I understand and appreciate , keeping people employed tons of reasons but when the dollar is on par and in many cases we are almost a 53rd state what the heck, there really shouldnt be that much of a price difference. By the time it is shipped and duties are paid there would probably be a savings but how much is warranty, service and a relationship with your local dealer worth? Used bikes are a different story. I may be talking a bit out me arse here but I am curious now to see what has to be done to bring a new Triumph here or if it is even possible. Maybe have to get someone to buy it and then re sell it as a used one? Wonder if warranty is transferable? Either way I will ride if i got to pay then i will. But im curious now.
