To buy?

I am looking at a 98 595 with 5k on it. i havent owned a triumph but have numerous other bikes both jap and euro. a good friend of mine has it in his basement and there is one small problem with it.

the last time he took it out (which was 3 or 4 years ago) he stopped at the gas station at the end of his street and shut it off to fill up. when he turned the key back on nothing happened. no lights, no electronics, no nothing. he pushed it home and went out and bought a new aprilia tuono. so there is has sat for that long. he just had no interest in messing with it. i know that he is very meticulous with his stuff and if it is an easy fix it could be a hell of a deal.

does anybody here have a clue what the problem could be (other than the obious stuff like battery, fuse ect)?

Thanks for any info you can provide!!!

cpettit, Welcome to the forum. More than likely you'll, at minimum, need to install a new quality battery, drain the gas, a coolant flush and oil/filter change. Tire age has to be suspect in my book. If it died just after running and hadn't been put away for three years I'd check the 40 amp fuse.

More comments will follow, I suspect.

That would be my guess...

thats the kind of info i was looking for. i was already counting on tires, fluids ect but the electrical issue is what i am pondering. are there any major mechanical differences in the 595 and the 955? power, suspension, brakes? the only mod that i know of on this bike is a leo vinci high mount slip on.

It could just be a broken wire.

Mine did the same and it was the wire to the ignition switch. Once the bike has been started the power relay keeps everything going. Once you shut off the relay clicks off and won't start again because there is no power to it. The offending wire was in the connector on the end of the ignition switch wire where it plugs into the main loom on the right hand side of the fairing. It gets pulled by the steering.

Lucky I was at home but it took a fair time to work out what the problem was.

I know I have an '02 but I beleive the set up is similar to the earlier ones.

In 2006, the last model year for the 955i, the bike had 149 horsepower. The 1998 T595 had 130. While 20 horsepower is fairly substantial, I wouldn't let it hinder you from scooping up a good deal on a T595.

There are a lot of differences between the two bikes. First of all, they won't use the same ECU and a lot of the other electronics are dissimilar, the dash is not digital on the T595, the newer 955i is about fifteen pounds lighter, the exhuast systems are different and unless you get the 1999 or 2000 955i, the bikes look nothing alike.

Also, weren't the T595s notorious for loosing 4th gear? I remember reading that somewhere...

Changeover was at VIN 57946. My '98 is beyond that with a 1/1998 build date for a quick comparison.

As Fivehundo said, there's a significant amount of difference between the 595 and later 955s.

Having said that I agree that the extra power isn't that big a deal. From experience (And what I've read) the extra power's towards the top end of the rev range and the earlier bikes have plenty of grunt where you're most likely to use it.

I'd say go for it and grab yourself a bargain. Sounds as though it could be a relatively easy fix with a lot to gain at the end of it.

Bought a new Tuono as a result? Your friend's got too much money...
