Other Motorcycle: anything I can get.
If its cheap grab it with both hands, they are a stunnig bike made for real world riding and it should be a quick fix, must be a fuse of bad connection somewhere.

I went and looked at it today. I feel like it can be had for an even 3,000$. It actually has 6800 on the clock but other than the little electrical issue is in great shape. here are a couple pics.

About 18 months ago I bought my black '98 with 14K miles for $3,600 which included extras such as a rear seat cowl, SS Powermax underseat exhaust and carbon fiber goodies. I'd want to be pretty sure the problem with your friend's bike is minor before I paid $3,000 for it. Now if you can snag it for $2,000, it's a simple fix and all you're out is for new battery, tires and fluids then you've found a pretty good deal.

BTW, the power the T595 makes is nearly perfect for the way I ride. I don't race on the streets, so the good low end grunt and great mid range roll on power works great for me. It's may be heavier than many other sport bikes, but it's also more comfortable to ride. Like bradtx said, if it's a later VIN 98 it won't have the 4th gear issue. Sticky front brakes and cold start issues are about the only negatives you might need to sort out on the '98.

Good Luck.

Question

Well for reference I just bought a 98 with 11,000 on it last weekend for 3,000 cash. He was asking 3,500 but I offered and he took it. It is in perfect shape with all of the service records. It has the high mount can, polished frame and wheels, and came with a jacket, set of leathers, and a couple lids... I won't use, but still a little extra. I threw in some pictures for everyone... I would say 3,000 is a good deal for a 98 t595 on the market today, but it's just iffy about the problem. You can't tell how bad it is until you get it fixed... Maybe since he is your bud you can try to work out a deal where if the problem is too major then he will buy back. Or he could let you try to fix it on your time and money before you buy?

$3000 for a bike that's not running is a little high.

He's not going to get that for the bike from anyone else. I'd say you should offer him around $2500 for it. I wouldn't really spend more than that. If it were a newer 955i, it might be worth $3k, in non-running condition but I just can't see him getting $3k for that bike, while it's not running.

If you buy it, you're going to have to put about $500 into the bike anyway. New tires, fixing the electronics, cleaning it up, other odds and ends, etc... You could tell him that he can do all that stuff, get the bike running and then you'll give him $3k. Otherwise, $2500 is fair because you're going to have to do all this work just to get it roadworthy.

IMHO...

If it's not running and you don't know why, I wouldn't give more than what I could part it out for...just in case the problem ends up being catastrophic (although it sounds more like a minor electrical glitch).

Are you a gambling man?

I'll tell you this though...if you do get it on the road, it will most likely become your favorite bike. The power, sound, character...Daytonas truly are awesome machines.
