Can someone tell me off the top of their head what size hose and length will i need to replace all the lines in the tank from pump to filter etc, did it 4 years ago but cant remember what i used.
Bike takes a lot of priming to get started and splutters badly on acceleration .
Finally got around to getting some new hose , like bloody rocking horse poo to find someone that had it in stock. I got 5/16 (8mm) so hope thats the right size, will pull pump plate off tonight.
Bit of a 1 man show, seems i have no fuel flow but pump is priming. Must be a blocked filter so will have to order a new one and remove the pump plate again.
It's curious that you had to change the internal tank hose four years ago. Just last year I changed my fuel filter. It was definitely restricted but after close to 20 years of gas submersion the hoses were still sound and re-used. Were your replacement hoses a Triumph part or at least suitable for gasoline submersion or were they generic gas line? I do not believe regular automotive gas line can guaranty the outer rubber cover to be gas proof. When you go back inside the tank rub your thumb over the new gas line. It should not come away black.
Original pump and hoses were covered in a brown gunk so replaced them all but i dont think the hose was a submersible type just normal EFI hose which is why it had started to deteriorate to the point of falling apart and possibly clogging the filter.
Definitely not a Triumph part, hate to think what the hose would cost from them.
New hose is as clean as new after a week.
Not impressed with the Gates submersible efi hose , replaced filter and found the outer sheath starting to come off.
Found the hose had come off the pump which caused my running issues , stupid pump design with no barb.
Just replaced the pump on a mates ducati S4 monster with a kemso pump which has a good barb on it.
I thought the issue sussed but i cant get any pressure into the fuel lines or rail, tested and confirmed pump is pumping and new filter so thats not blocked.
I sat the complete pump plate in a container of fuel and i get nothing out of the return pipe and pressurised fuel is coming out of the bottom of the pump, i drained the tank while i had it apart and got some pea soup in the bottom of the fuel tank.
Finally got it fixed, the o-ring in the fuel feed tank fitting was swollen and even when opened by the hose fitting being pushed in i still wasnt getting any fuel flow.
Replaced the o-ring and back to normal again, although i think this has been a problem for a while and it would splutter when revved hard which now has gone.
Those O-rings should be on a routine replacement schedule. I bought a bag at a local automotive store. Can be very frustrating to find the cure sometimes. Glad you got to it.
So i attempted to ride to work this morning and got to start of freeway and engine would barely run past idle, ended up with a flat battery so wife came to give me a jump start. Managed to get home and take the car, looks like its pump plate off again.
Definitely fuel delivery related as when it stalled i could re-start and it would run and rev over 4k rpm for about 10-20secs.
Pump plate off and fittings removed revealed a couple of issues. Hose from filter to pump had de-laminated and split at the clamps and the o-ring that i replaced in the fittings must have been slightly too big effectively reducing fuel flow.
New piece of submersible hose and a smaller o-ring and we are back in business, went for a 15min ride and so far so good. About to have lunch then out for a better (longer ride) , lovely 28c today so may as well make the most of it.
Spoke too soon, got about 5klms from home and died. Wife came with tools so i could do a roadside tank removal, pump plate off and fuel hose to pump was flapping in the breeze. Changed clamp with screw type hose clamp started up ( after a jump start ) and got 1klm up the road before it died, it will be the same issue with hose coming off the pump as it has no barbs.
Will get some s/steel wire and see if i can wire it so it wont come, or replace the pump with one that has a barb on it.
Battery seems to have crapped itself as well, 5 years old so cant complain.
This is certainly strange. I've never had a problem with those hoses blowing off. I'm assuming I have the exact same pump as you. As I recall those hoses are originally custom molded. I wonder if just biting the bullet for Triumph parts would solve the issue. Or is it at all possible your return side is blocked. Dead heading the pump without an open return can can do this.
Well, I really can't either, just kind of grasping at straws like you must be by now. How the heck can such a seemingly simple problem continue to defy repair? I was just looking at some ebay pumps and they all do appear to be barb'd. I was also surprised by the prices for a pump kit, US$ 14.00 or 15.00 in some cases for brand new ones. Can they be any good?
Have you assured the return is free?
On another note, I noticed in another thread your reference to a LR Disco. Is this one with the old Rover push-rod V8? I have a Triumph TR8 with the 3.5 liter variation of that engine.
I did have 2 x 3.5 range rovers but my discovery is the 2.5TDI, i do love the 3.5 though good little motor just underpowered in a 2 ton 4wd.
Pulled pump out again last night and this time the hose came off the filter end, replaced the clamp and tie wired the hose clamp to the pump and so far the 28klm ride to work was issue free.
I bought a Kemso japanese pump off ebay for $40AUD for my mates S4 Monster, good quality pump for the money with a lifetime warranty.
Not sure i would gamble on a $15 pump.
I couldn't find suitable submersible hose at my local car parts stores. I was directed to a marine supply store. They had hose that would work, but not in the size I needed. Left original hoses on for now.
Rode a couple of days last week and no problem but this morning i lost power about 5klm from home , called the wife to come and bring some tools so i can lift the tank and remove the pump plate expecting the hose to be off again.
Got the tail off before she arrived and then had everything off ready to lift the tank, lifted it up and thought it felt a bit light.
Turned out while siphoning the tank a few times while sorting out the fuel hose problem i must have put less back in than i thought, quick trip back home to grab 2ltrs and then off to the servo to fill up with some 98.
That was the first time i have ever ran out of fuel on a bike, bloody crappy dodgy fuel light.
I replaced mine about 5 years ago. The hose triumph has to replace the original one is a straight piece of fuel hose. I couldn’t figure out how to put it in without the hose being restricted, so I found a Aprilia part that had molded turns. It worked good, but now it blew off. I need to replace it, but I don’t have a part number. Does anyone?
No. The one I’m looking for is fuel hose with molded corners.
