Salvage advice

Its been a little while since I've been on but I need some direction and advice. My 06 Tona was in an accident this past October. It wasn't a bad fall, low speed and didn't crash into anything. Of course after the damage estimate from the dealer, the insurance company totalled the bike. I purchased it back salvaged from the insurance company. Its mainly cosmetic damage. I live in New York.

My questions are:

What is the process for getting a salvage bike back on the road?

If I wanted to sell the bike as is, how do I determine how much to ask for?

Is there any place besides Triumph and Bike Bandit to look for Body parts? Fairings, front ends etc?

nycdread, Getting a salveged m/c back on the road is a state-by-state thing. Usually in Texas it takes a safety inspection prior to relicensing.

e-bay can be a tedious search, but parts can be found. Ditto for craigslist. The best thing about repairing your old bike is that you know it's history. If the damage is cosmetic a less expensive route often taken is converting to a S3.

You might also consider parting it out on eBay and buying a new bike with your settlement. There are a few of us in the middle of a salvage operation that would likely bid up the value of those good parts. I've noticed a few good low mileage Daytonas listed on eBay for under $5k recently.

What do you need body wise?

I've got some stuff but the colors might not match exactly.

I've got 2 tanks, a few side fairings, one rear and some other odds and ends.

I forgot if you said the forks were bent or not. What about the radiator--- any damage?

As regards the body parts (especially fairing parts and dash parts and etc) the cost of getting these from triumph new would put you near or above the market value of the bike. When I crashed my new 04 Daytona this past spring (a relatively light crash) the cost to restore it to as new factory condition was close to five grand. I rebuilt it (with advice from members of this board) for about one third the cost not counting any labor. The speedtonas can come out really nice.

My own sense is that I would either rebuild it (if you want to keep it) or sell it as a whole wrecked bike--- I would not parts it out. First is the labor involved in taking it apart, then advertising it (say ebay or here in the classified parts), then packaging the stuff up--- in the end your going to only sell perhaps a portion of the parts and then have a lot of parts that will be hard to give away.

I also have a spare wrecked 04 daytona 955i--- sold it complete as a wreck to a well intentioned nice guy off of the west coast who paid me in full for it two months ago. I am in philly--- the guy was getting quotes of $1200 to get it out to the west coast--- and asked if he could get out of the deal (which I will refund his money). So--- if you want to sell it--- best to get a local\regional buyer who will pick it up whole and don't cement the deal till he is in your driveway with a pickup truck or trailer. \

I'd potentially have an interest--- and I am regional--- wrecked tonas are going for btwn say $1500 to $3000 would be my guess. Age, mileage, where your located, and extent of damage fixing it somewhere btwn the high and low figures\guesstimates.

Figure the person is going to have to put in probably a grand to fifteen hundred (assuming the forks are ok) to build into a speed triple clone.

folks here can help walk you through the rebuilding process--- give you ideas and sources and etc. But unless you do the labor yourself--- shop labor would put you well over the value of the bike I am guessing.

best of--- sorry to hear of your mishap---- sounds like you made it through relatively ok.

Hi Rich:

Got your pm. Tried to call ya. But to head off any further inquiries--- I did have the second (black) wrecked 04 tona up for sale but it fell through and in retrospect--- I am going to keep the bike for spares for
my own 04 Speedtona.

But I always enjoy talking to you so I will try to call you again tomorrow.

Thanks for the feedback fellas! I really appreciate it.

MQ, as far as I can tell the forks are fine. Looking at them they look straight and the radiator is not damaged either. Is there a way I can test/check the forks to make sure there aren't damaged?

Some other info on my Jet Black 06 Tona is that it has 1,100K miles on it. It was purchased brand new from a dealer in July of 07 with 5 miles on it.

Fivehundo the body parts I'm mainly looking for are:

Right side fairing
Cockpit fairing
Left side panel
Right carbon infill panel
Alternator cover

Hopefully I can get it back into shape for as little cost as possible. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Those are the first parts that go when the bike crashes. Good luck. You may want to get her to look like some of the great naked D955's I've seen here and pick away through the dealer network and eBay until you find what you need.

I've got a few of those, but they've all been repaired. Your best bet is probably to get some airtech fairings and have them painted. You can't beat their prices.

I assume you mean the clutch cover because most everything else is on the right side, correct?

My original got messed up when I offed and I bought a carbon one from Racecomp. Mine has a bunch of road rash as well...
