Blue Flames

Was riding back from the Bike show in Birmingham last night with Mrs Nickwiz in tow and she says that my 955i was occasionaly emitting pretty blue flames from the exhaust! Now I don't have a blue flame exhaust fitted before the wisecracks start!
I think it means the bike is overfuelling. Does that mean I need the ignition or injection tweaked? I'm great with carbs but EFI stumps me. Or is it fine and I shoulsd just enjoy the pyros. I have a carbon can co race pipe fitted.

Nick, The '04 D955i used to be pretty bad WRT backfiring regardless of tune or can. When I changed plugs to help with my cold starts, the backfiring went to near zero...no idea why.

A couple of contributing factors are one, there's no decel mode in the ECU like most EFI cars with a manual trans and two, the '04's idle is set at 1200 RPM, just a tad lower than the other two.

The only case of backfiring while not on overrun cleared with a new tank of gas.

Blue flames

My ST used to do similar on over-run. In my case it was because a little air was bleeding into the pipe at the join between the can and the main pipe.

The slot cut in the can pipe end to allow it over the main pipe was a little longer than the amount that could overlap, leaving a little square hole for the air to get in.

Have a quick check for something similar

Modern Ferraris do that as well. So does my roomate's Factory Tuono.

It actually means your engine is pretty well dialed as far as your fuel system is concerned.

Let me ask you this: When the flames come from your pipe, can you feel a loss of power for a second?

If not, you're good...

Same on 2004 Sprint

Nick,
I have an '04 Sprint ST with a Triumph SS race can and my buddies I ride with tell me that I emit flames at times, this is only when I am going for it (which is frequently).

I have the latest off road tune and run a K&N air filter as well.
I think on the 955 this is normal.

Rexx is on the money too I believe.

cheers,
DaveM
