Vibration between 5,500 - 6,000

Hi,

I've just started running in my Daytona engine, and now that I have reached the scary levels of the 7000 rpm limit I have noticed that there is quite a vibration occurring around the 5.5-6k rpm range.

Having previously had the standard Sprint ST engine (which was very smooth) I'm not sure this is normal for the Daytona mill.

Could you please set my mind at rest on this one....

Rexx

Unhappy I'm having same problem, only mine just started after I passed the 11,000 odo mark!

I don't know what is going on, but I bought my bike used from a guy that maintained it very well. Drove it back from Virginia to Kentucky in about 1 day and it ran perfect. Now 1300 miles later, I've changed my tires, oil and filter (just to be sure!). I've ridden it another 500 miles and im starting to get the same sound you are talking about. I was out on a sunday ride, started like normal and about 20 miles into it, started hearing a buzzing noise like bearings were rattling around in the head. But it only happens when I put a load on the tranny. If I normally rev my engine when stopped, it doesn't make that sound. And it only happens between 5000-6500 rpm with load. I know im getting to my 12000 mile maintenance mark and need a valve adjustment but I don't think that is what it is quite yet. Maybe im wrong... Also need to replace my plugs and fuel lines. Any suggestions as to what the problem could be. The sound is coming from the general direction of the top of the handle bars to the radiator area. Everything else is tightened up. Suggestions???

Rexx, Yours may be something that requires a map adjustment. Which header, throttle bodies, injectors and ECU are you using on the Daytona engine?

j, Almost sounds like preignition. Brand new tank of gas?

Red face Preignition...maybe...

Yea, it was a brand new tank of gas. I filled up just before the ride and about 20 miles into it, started sounding funny. Think it's the plugs? I checked all the components on the front fairing and all around that area (gas tank forward) and everything seemed to be tight. Preignition sounds like a plausable cause! (when I first read it, thought it said pregnation, was like WTH!!! LOL) Would love to spit out another NEW one out the tail pipe! Well, I'll check if it's the plugs or if you have any other suggestions why preignition would be occuring ( Why would it be occuring, and solutions???), I'm open! BTW...What do I do or what are the proper steps to taking care of preignition? I'm a new rider and this is my first bike so I don't know what is really going on. Kinda expensive on my part but I don't mind cause I feel totally at home on this **** thing!!! I LOVE it! BTW... I talked to my local dealer and he said it might sound like a loose item on the front. But I checked and don't see anything, if I gotta take it to him he's $75/Hr. GRRRRRRR. I can afford it but GRRRRRRRRRR..........The only thing I have to say about that is Triumph's are REALLY nice bikes but they sure cost an arm and a left nut for fixing...Unless you know how to work on em'. If you don't and you ride one after "fixin" it, you lose an Eye or both yer nuts....LMAO!!!!

j, Preignition can occur for a number of reasons, but in your case it may very well be that the fuel you bought was regular grade rather than 89+ octane (US spec). Try this, run the bike under as little load as possible for about 75 miles and fill again with premium. You can if you wish go to an auto parts store and pick up some octane booster, but be careful with the mixing.

My '06 buzzed the bars at the same rpm range until I changed bars/end weights. I'm with bradtx, though; I think it's an EPA-required mapping issue, which I intend to take care of soon via TuneBoy. There is also a soft spot in the power delivery at the same rpm range.

vibration

I've got a 06 Daytona, just went for a ride to make sure about vibration in the 7000rpm, no problems, pretty smooth. The bike has only done 3000kms though. I hope it doesn't start having problems. I've been using 98 octane when possible, otherwise use premium which is 96 octane, that is Australian rating though, I don't know about the American stuff. But it runs a lot smoother on the higher octane. Only mods is a TOR high pipe and remapping.

Red face Premium Always!

I always put the best gas into my tank. Always most expensive, shoot, it's only 13 bucks to fill...lol. But I'll try some octane booster as well, couldn't hurt to try...

Mapping

Hi Brad,

I'm definitely going to be doing a mapping and dyno exercise, not least of which to get a working fuel gauge again!!!

I'm currently running 10071 (?) map in an '05 engine as was loaded at Triumph-ant. The engine is breathing through the Standard ST setup, and is exhausting through a Daytona header with the ST link pipe (in Daytona diameter) wiggle round the chassis foot and kick-up ahead of the rear wheel and out through the SS can.

This obviously has compromises, and Wayne of tuneboy has kindly grafted the Massive3 tune values into the ST tune to give me the massive fuelling with the ST signal for fuel gauge etc.

Once I've gone past the 1000 mile point I will spend the next 500 working through the whole range with increasing enthusiasm, and then I will take it to a dyno and go through the following steps

measure it as standard

install the massive3/ST tune and measure again

make any adjustments required to deal with the compromise of my installations and measure again.

I was just curious to know if any Daytona owners had noticed an area of vibration in the 5.5-6k range. It's not heavy, but it is strong enough to be felt through the footpegs and bars, and if you stay at 5750 you can get tingly feet after about 10 minutes

I have vibration ad well.

Going down the freeway at about 70 to 80MPH, I think I'm running about 5 to 6K and I get the vibration in my bars. Makes my hands numb after a while. This will need to get fixed before I can tour the bike.
