running in

Got my new 06 Daytona, 3k's on the clock, run in procedure, should I follow instructions on tank, or run it in a bit more aggressively? Seems a long run in period....Great bike, handles nice, sounds nice, looks nice.......

Can't hurt to go by the recommended break in procedure. Really isn't long to get it to the WOT point. A nice weekend will put you where you want to be.

DALERF, With 3K on the clock it's out of break-in. I followed the instructions on the tank, but mine was brand new.

Brad, he's in Perth, Western Australia so I think he's referring to Kilometers (k's).

Mate, take it easy for around 1000km, change the oil at 200km and then have the 1000km service done by your dealer. Have the throttle slop adjusted because they're always sloppy.

After 1000Km, ride it like it's run in but don't flog it until after around 3000Km.

During running in, don't labour it. Let it rev freely but don't lug it.

If possible, find some hilly roads and ride it through the gears accelerating and moderating your rev range. Above all, have fun...

DALERF, Do you have near zero kms now and asking about a 3K km break-in or is 3K already showing? Break-in here lasts 1K miles which is about 1600 km so our procedures may not be the same.

I can only comment on the '04 here, but Triumph seems to still 'wear fit' items and even my chain benefitted judging by the even stretch. There were times when I went above the RPM range max, but not under load and not by too much. IMHO, the transmission is the main befactor as mine was notchy at first and by 2K miles came around was pretty smooth.

The bike has now got 500km on it, so I am keeping to run-in procedure going to 6000rpm. Getting the hi-rise Triumph muffler fitted at first service, that should sound nice.

re running-in

I remember reading a few years ago about a Triumph that siezed during testing by a magazine in the uk. The bike had only covered about 500 miles. The reason was that the factory machine to very fine limits..i.e. 3-4 microns as opposed to other manufacturers 6-8microns. Dont know if this is right, but Triumphs need careful running-in?

I know tuners and mechanics who do agree with him, however, I do not.

If you do your own survey of break-in procedure, you will find that like motors have like break-in procedures, regardless of which continent they were built on.

I'm willing to bet break-in specs are the result of large peer groups of engineers, such as the SAE, etc.

IMHO, a few important things for break in are; DO NOT lug the engine and be sure to modulate the throttle regularly, ie, gently roll on and roll off. This allows cylinder pressure to press the rings against the cyclinder wall, and also allows the negative pressure in the cylinder to draw oil up past the not fully seated rings.
