uggghhhh, tires

After being thoroughly disappointed in the new Avon ST's I decided I would not buy another avon product. That said I've just about run through a set of Metzler K6's and didn't really care for those, broke free in corners and just felt unstable. Then, on top of that, it looks like I'll only be getting maybe 5k out of em. It appears 5-6k miles is all I'll be hoping for out of any tire anymore so now I just need to find a tire that handles well with the same 5-6k life span. I am thinking michelin pilot road 2. Does anyone have good experience with the michelin's. Please no Brigdestone suggestions. As always thanks in advance.

TT

I have the Michelin Pilot Powers, and they work well with handling. I have put a little over 3K miles and still have plenty of tread.

I have two track days and about 60 street miles on pilot powers. Obviously, they are not the same as the roads....but I am impressed with them so far. I got a little step out from the rear twice on 45 degree corners, but at the track they were very stable and confidence inspiring. PP's get a thumbs up from me.

What didn't you like about the Avon STs? Mine are terrific, best set of tires I've owned.

On my various sport bikes, I've had Dunlops, Pirellis, Michelins, and Brigestones. You've barred me from telling you which ones I like the most. The most I've gotten out of any of them was about 5600 miles (again, can't say which), and the least was about 2600 out of the Dunflops. Nothing has felt as good as the sport touring tires.

There was an interesting article in one of the British mags recently about sport tires vs. sport touring vs I forget what else - probably some sort of high mileage tire. A few riders got to take a spin on their bike with each kind, without knowing what kind they were on for each run. They all were able to pick out the different kinds on their own, and basically the sport touring tires ruled the day. If you literally never do anything but canyon runs, and can truly keep a sport tire up to temp, those are the best. For most real-world riders, myself included, sport touring tires are the best.

Of course, whatever gives you the most confidence (assuming you aren't clinically delusional ) is what you should pick. For me, it's... oops, almost forgot.

14,000 miles on my last set of Pilot Roads. Still had plenty of tread but i didn't like the ridges anymore. A very predictable tire, with plenty of grip. Even at 14K cupping wasn't the problem on the front, just the ridges. Granted I'm easier on my tires than a lot of other guys around this site, so your mileage may vary.

Hidesert,

BRIDGESTONE

:

I just never like the way they wear, like the last set of avons I bought wear wasn't good. Handling was always good though.

Well, I've never seen anyone praise the Bridgestone B010 OEM tyres but I liked them...They did stick to the road albeit a little iffy in the wet.

The rear was totally shot and illegal at 6000km (3700 miles) and the front was scalloped. This wear included a 1500Km gentle run in period so I figure that a replacement set, even if they were available were not going to give me a long run for my dollar.

Pilot Powers for me. It would be Avon Storms but I can't get them here.

I'll see how they go. Stoner is doing OK on Bridgestones though...

Funny; I liked the Bbrand particularly for their wet weather and cold weather traction. And that's the 020s as well. I usually got about 5000 miles out of them, which is twice what Dunlop 208s gave me.

Apparently I've got Pilot Roads on now, so maybe I'll try Pilot Sports next. I can say the Roads are inferior to the 010s or even 020s in my opinion.

I've used Pirelli Diablos quite succesfully on my prev Bandit 1200, about 4500miles from a rear. I'm using an 010 front and 020 rear on my daytona 955 after running out the first rear 010 in 3700miles!! The 180 rear tyre sure livens up the rear end, i'm not quite to the edges but I am seeing the slight polishing effect on the curved part where the tyre is slightly spinning up under load.
WRT uneven tyre wear, pushing the front and poor suspension set up can both add to uneven tyre wear, its worth revisiting the dynamics of how you ride too?

Gaps.
