tank slapper

After a spirited 150 miler, on my way home last decent curve I get through only to have to slow to about 40 from 95 because of a Harley coming out of the same curve. At any rate no oncoming traffic hammer it and go around hit a couple of rough spots in the road and manage a pretty violent tank slapper on my way around this person tire screeching from the side to side movement and it fortunately worked it's way out as I passed and continued to throttle it, but this is the first time since I bought the tona that it was poor for handling the road. No idea why, but i really don't want that happening while riding hard again. I have noticed a bit of a different feel to the suspension the last few thousand miles. Tires maybe??? I really don't like the metzlers on it now kinda squirmy feeling in corners and the only tire I can break loose in a curve regularly, also don't like that either. Ideas anyone, experience, I thought these bikes were pretty stable for handling for the most part and I really don't think my old ass is out riding the suspension.

TT-
If the tires "feel squirmy" I would think worn rear tire or a cupped front tire, check the head bearing too.

TT, I kinda lean towards the headbearing(s), or at least the adjustment. I would also check suspension settings at both ends as it was an outside force that initiated the headshake.

Ditto, get your hands dirty & run them over the tires profile. If the front feels wavey off the center, or a ridge on the back one, its probably time to chuck em for some new ones.

The headstock bearings were loose and I did adjust them, but wonder if there wasn't damage already done. I do have a new set of the bearings made for a side oad, but have not installed them because I cannot get the bike hoisted in the space I have to work. I don;t think it is the metzlers causing it, but never know with a combination of bad bearings it could be. The tires have about 3k on em now and look good, feel good. Suspension is also set ok. I'll have to find a way to change the bearings and see how it feels.

Let's also not forget that this bike is typically very stable considering it's got a relatively steep rake angle and no steering damper. I forgive mine for giving a little shake now and then. I'm not surprised to see it get a little upset at a bad enough divot in the road when leaned over some with the gas on; these are all factors that lead the front end down the road (sorry about the pun) to instability.

I had a similar issue with mine at 4,000 miles the the tires were the culprit. Too many highway miles created a nice table top on the rear. I went to 180/70 Avon Storm and did the front as well. Great improvement in cornering, wet riding and STABILITY.

I have some cupping on my BT010s, but after 9k miles it's expected. Did switching to the 180 rear tire help them wear more evenly?

How do you get 9K on a set of BT010s? I have less than half that and they are junk. But, they were junk from the start.
I bought an '03 Daytona with 3200 miles on it three weeks ago to replace my Speed Triple. I do notice the 'tona is a little more prone to headshake than the S3 and I think it has a lot to do with the Bridgestones. The Pilot Powers on the S3 were about the best I had ever experienced and they will be going onto the 'tona ASAP!

Ya hit the nail on the head, Pablo.

One of the best things that happened to my 'tona was picking up a screwdriver bit in the rear tire at about 1,200 miles.

Running Metzler M1's right now. Gonna try the Michelins next, not that I'm not happy with the M1's.

Back on topic;

I run a steering stabilizer. I think it's well worth the cheap insurance; well, at $500, cheap is a relative term.
