T595 or 955
How bad was the T595 compared to the later Daytona's ie 2006, am looking at low mileage '97 T595 or demo 2006 for twice the price! Friend have just got Retro Jap bikes, so need Sunday bike, would T595 be suitable?

Just from memory, from reading, I believe the older ones had some electrical issues up to 99, power was way down on the early models and for some reason I remember reading quite a bit about a sprag clutch issue. You may want to ask over on T595.net there are quite a few people that have the old version tona's over there. The 06 from experience is awesome in about every way. I do have an 01 Daytona motor in my RS and it is no comparison to the 06 in any way.

the 97 was the 1st year that the 2nd generation Tona was made. it suffers from a soft suspension. it is way down on power to the 04-06 models. the ride is more stiff on the older Tonas...the new ones handle the road with better suspension. the new ones have better braking..IMO. i loved my 99, its looks are hard to beat...bu this 04 is a better bike in all aspects. i would pay for the newer one. its had all the kinks worked out....just get on and go.... you will have to address the suspension issue if ya push the 97 hard...so it might be cheaper up front....but it will cost later...

DALERF, The '97s had a problem with 4th gear (expensive). Unless the one you're looking at has been repaired already, get the later model.

T595
Dalerf
the only problem I have had with my T595 was the sprag clutch. Apart from that everything else was fine but I do agree that the rear suspension could be better. It must be remembered that these are just machines and they do wear out. I pushed my Daytona pretty hard through the mountain roads near where I lived and it never let me down. It is still my favorite bike and I believe one of the best looking bikes around. Next year I'm going to put her back on the road but I'm going to put a turbo on her, an Ohlins shock on the rear, white power springs up front and triple spot brakes, plus a heap more carbon bits.
Good luck and I hope you are happy with whatever you get.

G'day there, i got a '98 955i Daytona and have had no problems. Maybe if you are a very hard and fast rider the newer model might be for you, i find that my '98 is more than enough for me, looks and sounds great to, you need to weigh up the pros and cons, what is best suited to you... all the best with which ever way you go...

In my mind I know the 2006 is a better bike, though I like the style of the 97 model better, the newer ones look like any other sportsbike. It's a shame the resale value for the Daytona's is so low, and they don't seem to move very fast here in Australia.

Just do it mate!
Mate,
you have just answered your own question, style beats go anytime. Although I love my Sprint it still doesn't hold a candle to the Daytona for looks or feel. I am pretty lucky to have the best of both worlds. One thing I did first to the Daytona was put a set of Tingate risers on her plus a stack of carbon gear. The guty who runs the Tassie auto museum where she lives at the moment said to me the other day she is the most photograhed bike and the one he is asked the most about. If you get the T595 I have a Baster tank cover and bag for sale.
Good luck the Tankman

Going from the older Daytona to an '04, I feel I've gotten improved low speed, low RPM smoothness, the heat that used to come through the bottom of the tank is gone, and it's more powerful. And I love the silver rims on the '04; the rims on my '98 were black.
What did I give up? The '98 had steel braided lines and Dzus fairing fasteners straight from the factory, and the common opinion seems to be that the T595s were better looking.
