Angry Fuel Trouble

It's an 05 Tona with roughly 9k miles, and I'm getting terrible fuel mileage. It's down to 28mpg, about 90miles before the fuel light turns on. I'm running the stock tune with the stock pipe, I can't find any obvious leaks. I have a Tuneboy, no faults are indicated. Anyone have any ideas? I'm so frustrated I'm starting to look at other bikes. Please help..

Sagaris,
Definitely something wrong, I get nearly 200 mi before the fuel light on my 2003. I'd try loading a different tune. There are a bunch available in the knowledge base at T595.net.

Do you ride with others? If so, do they report smelling fuel in your exhaust? Have you checked the plugs to see what they look like? Is it running smoothly?

Throwing out semi-random questions in hopes of bringing something to light...

Good point of conversation. I think I am having similar results. I have a 2000 daytona and use it all week for commuting. I get about 110 miles per tank (4 gallons) roughly about 27 mpg. Now the interesting part. It gets about 38 to 40 MPG for long trips on the highway. I thought it was running very rich because the exhaust smell was pretty gasey. New tune and a power commander later, the exhaust smells much better, things run better, but mileage is still the same.

My only conclusion is that I must be flogging it very hard during commuting. If that is the case, the daytona has a pretty radical swing in MPG depending on how you drive it. Anybody else get low MPG flogging it around town in traffic?

Wouldn't bad valves account for a drop in MPG? If that were the case, I wouldn't be able to get better mileage on the highway.

Thanks for the help guys. It runs smoothly, but even I can smell the gas when I ride. When I went to upload a new tune, I noticed two black tubes that were loose. One was matte black, the other was ribbed with a check valve at the end.

Has anyone checked their valves before the 12k mi service? I get the same 90mi range regardless of city or highway riding. Thanks again!

Thumbs up

Around town I get no more than 35 mpg, and I do flogg her a bit. Highway mpg goes up to about 45 mpg. So there's definitely an acceleration penalty of about 25% when you figure it all out, at least in my case.

Fuel Problems

Where are the hoses that you mention running from? The ribbed one sounds like one of the hoses that run from the Idle Air Control valve (adds/subtracts air flow to adjust idle speed) to each of the intake ports under the throttle bodies. If one of those is off it could mess things up to some degree as that would constitute a huge vacuum leak. I haven't learned enough about these motors yet to know whether or not they use a manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor, but if they do, a low vacuum condition could be interpreted by the ECM as a high load situation, for which it would enrichen the mixture.
If you can smell the fuel in the exhaust, it's too rich. I'm surprised you haven't gotten an error code in the ECM because the O2 sensor can't compensate enough. Your nearest dealer should be able to hook up their scanner and see what's going on inside. In any case I wouldn't advise you to ride it very much longer like this as excessive fuel=washing oil from cyls., etc=premature engine wear.
