OK, i have been saying for a while that i was going to build a frame that can mount hard bags....well i finally got enough free time to devote to the project....the frames turned out great....i have the luggage on order from Chaparral motor sports. i bought the e360 GIVI matte silver bags. they appear to be 36 litres apiece but they are really 40 litres.
i made the frames out of stainless steel, i wanted the look and durability of stainless. the frame was built so that i could attach the GIVI tube frame to the bike. in the pictures the GIVI tube rack are black. the GIVI frames are universal to mount all of the monokey bags. the frames were listed as a M11 part in the GIVI catalog. the cost of each GIVI tube frame was 35 bucks, i think...
i bought stainless 3/8 pipe...not tube, and various pieces of flat stock. in all i think i paid 140 bucks for the stainless. i cut and shaped all the pieces and then took then to a welder friend and had him TIG weld up the frames.....i was a little disappointed in some of the welds...but for the price i couldn't complain....i did have him rework a few things though....
on the frames i made it so that i could bolt the GIVI frame to some aluminium pieces that can be moved towards the front of the bike, or to the rear....depending on how i want the luggage to sit. the aluminium pieces also allow me to move the Givi frames up or down...depending on how high or low i want the bags to sit....within a few inches. the stainless frames bolt are secured to the bike in 3 places. 1 is a flat bar that attaches under the seat. the 2nd is to a bolt that is just behind the seat on the sides. the 3rd is to a piece that attaches to the rear foot hanger attachment point on the frame.
i am going to also build a frame that mounts to the flat bar on either side of the seat and make a rack that will cover the rear seat. that way i can secure the odds and ends down with bungee straps. things like tents, sleeping bags....bulk item things.
the frames turned out very secure, and mount onto the bike in very little time. i think that it might take 10 minutes to disassemble the frames and to have the bike in canyon carver mode.....
when the bags come in i will test the system out and post some pics of the end results.....this wasn't horrible job, it just took a good amount of thinking to make it simple and durable.....let me know if anyone wants more info if they would be interested in making some for their selves.....
hope yall approve...heres some pics...
