Hey All,

I just purchased a 2005 Daytona 955i demo bike from a reputable dealer. When I took it out for a test last week the battery was dead. We all assumed it was from sitting around all winter. They threw a charge and it started up fine.

Three days later I returned and bought it and it was dead again so they threw in a new battery. Started up great. Following day (yesterday) it started, but I had to try a couple of times.

This morning I tried to start her up and it would turn over at all.

Do you guys know any reason this would happen other than a couple of bad batteries? Naturally the dealership is closed today so I can’t ask them until tomorrow.

Thanks,
Heath

Yesterday the dealership tested the charging system and found nothing wrong so they gave me a new battery. It sat all night last night and when I went to fire her up it fired up but took a few tries.

I suppose it's possible that the dealer got a bad batch of batteries so if this one is dead as well I may go buy one on my own and if that's bad then I know there is a proble with the charging system.

If you get 2 "dead" battery's in a row you might want to look elsewhere for the problem, see if anything is drawing any power when the bike is off.

Heath, You mentioned that the '05 has an upgraded exhaust. Probably one of the Triumph cans and that likely included a TOR (Triumph Off Road) tune. If it's # 10181 (which I have) it's a hard cold starter at times especially if you've the mandated E10 'summer blend' gasoline in your area.

Thanks for the response. I can’t tell specifically which exhaust it is. It is chrome with a metal Triumph logo brazed onto it.

What do you mean by hard cold starter? What would I do to remedy that?

Heath, Like this?

When the engine is cold it is difficult to start at times much more so with the E10 than the 'winter' blend. Triumph doesn't have a fix, but one thing that helps is to have the ECU regulate hot idle at about 1225 RPM. While the dealer is adjusting that with his diagnostic tool have the dealer check what's loaded...if 10128 or 10152 they're too lean for the can...any surging? Also, just in case nobody told you, don't touch the throttle when starting.

Hi Brad,

That's the can I have! The dealer took this bike over from another dealer who bought their Triumph line last year so they didn't do the work.

It's been starting the past two days but it takes about 5 tries. Is that normal? Should I expect that to continue? I am OK with it if that's just how it goes, but if not should I have my dealer perform that diagnostic you mentioned?

I sincerely appreciate your advice.

Best,
Heath

PS, great helmet.

Okay, I have a few questions. What was the last brand of motorcycle you owned? If it was something "other" than Triumph like mine was - you might not have a starting issue at all.

Triumphs like to crank before they start. It's not the simple "hit the button" like my Suzuki I had. The Triumph you have to hold the button a good 5-seconds before she wants to fire up.

The problem for me is actually worse in the summer time and depending upon where you live it might be the same for you. I live in a very humid area and I was told that the Triumphs aren't big fans of humidity.

I actually find the bike easier to start in the winter. Well, back in the good ol' days when it would start.

Heath, Thanks for the compliment on the helmet. :-D

Yeah, the cold start problem seems 'normal' sorry to say/write. That said, it's still best to verify your tune and check/adjust the hot idle speed (I had mine set to 1200 RPM and cold starting improved, was too low anyway). The hot idle range is 1200-1250 RPM, but 1250 leaves a pretty good lick when shifting into first.

Jenks, Hopefully if your dealer can't resolve the problem they'll get Triumph USA involved quickly...I mean really how many things can it be? A relay, a couple of interlock switchs, starter button, ignition switch, master power or the start button itself. Good Luck.
