So, my bike hit the 10,000 miles mark recently after an awesome trip to france. I went into my local dealership to ask about it, and he's quoted 8 hours (we're loking at maybe £350) labour, plus parts. What do you guys recon?

Looking in the haynes manual, there's a fair amount to be done, but this is pretty damned expensive. On top of that, I'm going to have to get the brake cable changed as it feels a tad notchy (living on a small island, the clutch gets used loads) and have the brake pistons cleaned as i'm experiencing the spongy brake issue that many others have. It looks like I'm going to be spending a small fortune here, which is less than ideal.

loco, I guess you were talking about the clutch cable? It may just need lube, unless it's beginning to fray.

How handy are you with a wrench? Except for the valve adjustment, there really isn't anything difficult to do at what our US manual shows to be the 12,000 mile service period.

If you own something exotic such as my rare Laverda 668 Formula and find yourself in the situation where you can't find a shop or dealer to look at it for you, you quickly discover that things such as cleaning brake pistons is really quite easy if you have a good tool set and a couple of hours.

I highly recommend the Metrinch tools, especially for the soft cheese metal found on bleed nipples and on brakes in general. They leave your bike looking factory fresh due to their design.

Personally, I would service whatever I could myself and let the shop do what you can't or will not do yourself. You will be more in touch with your bike, know that it's been done properly and carefully and save money at the same time.

My 0.02 cents worth

Brad makes a good point. Unless they're going inside the cases, you may be able to save some money. If they are changing the clutch plates/springs, I would let them do it. You'll have a friend for life if done right.
