All,
I've searched (forgive me if my search techniques are weak) and can't find info on cam chain noise.
'95 D12 30k miles. The dak dak dak noise appears to come from the top end right side of the bike, especially on-idle/low rpms whether cold or hot. The noise subsides once moving (it may still be there but I can't hear it over the exhaust)
I don't have a D12 manual yet (on order) but was looking at a tt600 manual and was trying to figure out;
1. How do you determine what is out of spec (tensioner, blades, chain, or all?)
2. What usually goes first?
3. Is it extremely detremental to keep riding (moderately) until parts can be aquired?

Thanks in advance!

Evenin Triton, i reckon my chains a bit loose too, although a lot od ppl say these engines are a bit noisey. Usually it's the chain that does the stretches first before anything else and they are usually easy to replace. It shouldn't hurt to ride it a little while waiting for the parts. I want to pull the rocker cover and check the chain slack and valve gaps on mine at some stage, it's easy enough to do one these older bikes.

My 95 D12 has 21,000 mles on it of which only 73 have been ridden by me. It's ALL new to me so I listening to my motor and chassis sounds and noises, wondering what's normal, what to ignore, and what to worry about and repair. I found this post from March 2004 on Bikez.com. I haven't attempted this remedy yet, but my bike makes the same rattling noise under the same conditions as yours. Does this post sound correct to you more learned experienced owners? Have any of you done this with your own bikes?

Triumph Daytona 1200, (common problems)

"Rattling or a whining noice indicates that your Balancer Shaft needs adjustment. I drove for a whole year irritated by the whining noice and no Triumph dealer could help me. Solution; At the right side below the crankcase cover there is a clamp with two balancer shafts hold at place by the shaft pinch bolts. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver and make adjustments whilst the engine is idling, noting that only one balancer pinch bolt should be slackened at a time. (rattling=too loosely)& (whining=too tightly meshed)."
null

Thanks,
Mushman

That may be it. The guy who ground shipped my bike from east-west coast said I had an out of balance problem with the clutch basket or something like that. I've been busy and haven't been able to call him back. I'll call him and ask about this.
The bike shop who changed my tires/replaced the battery when the bike got here in Hawaii siad it was a cam chain problem.
I did the "long screwdriver placed on several locations" yesterday but was unable to pinpoint the location.
If I find out anything I'll let you know.

Oh, yea, I only have 42 miles on my 30k miles bike!
And Today I figured out a few things while driving the D12...
It doesn't get blown around from a stray puff of wind like my Bonne
I love it cuz... It's a HOTROD!!! Classic lines and gobs of torque n HP (still breaking in the tires though!)

Ok, I tried the adjustment on the balancer shafts. Nothing happened when I turned the rear shaft one full turn in either direction. I produced the "Whine" when I turned the front shaft 1/8th turn clockwise. The "dak dak" sound never dissapeared.
The noise is only there on idle (I've ridden it daily since the first posting) and will dissappear at approx 2k rpms.
I didn't muck about much as I still don't have a manual yet. What about the sprag issue? Does that affect this bike? I understand it is a whole different sound/way the bike acts.
Thanks!
