My front metzler m1 is in good shape and i need a rear. I was considering replacing it and going on my way. I have had no problems with the M1's so far.
or
my local independent shop guy has some Metzler M3's and for 360$ will mount front and rear M3's on my beast.
What do you guys think? Has anyone had any experience with the M3's? Any other suggestions?
Anyone from the NYC area who knows of a good shop to have tires mounted?

I don't know anything about the Metzler tires, but I will comment on changing one tire or both. I only say this from experience, and that is replace both at the same time. I had an FZR600 and ran bridgstone battleaxes. My rear tire was very worn, and the front looked good enough I thought. So I went and just got a rear. Well, when riding, it felt very wierd. The tires were not tracking together. My theory and I remember the guy where I got the tires, because I went up and got the front tire, telling me, that they wear together. After I got the front tire on, it was night and day. So since then I always have replaced both at the same time. That was my experience.

Trafficfixr,

My roomate swears by Metzlers. I've never tried them myself but he doesn't use anything else.

Techman,

How did you like your battlaxes? Nobody I've talked to uses them...

I just got some Avon Storms, good S/T tire that will wear well, handle wet conditions, and (if they are anything like the Azaros) handle pretty darn good....If your front doesn't need it, don't waste the money....Usually a front will last twice as long as a rear...FWIW, I got my Avons from www.swmototires.com for right around $245, took the wheels off and to the local shop and had them mounted and balanced for $45....Swmototires is great, I got my tires in two days :-D

They were fine for my FZR600. The original back tire was a 140. And the battleaxes were the only ones I could find easily with a 150 size that would fit. If I remember, Pirelli had one, but they were more expensive, and at that time, I was not in a financial situation that I could afford it.

Battleaxes are the worst tires I've tried....I would bet that is where his issue came from...Motorcycle tires do not "wear together", they both endure completely different issues...Which is why rears wear out faster.
That isn't what I meant when I meant wear together. What I was trying to say was in the tracking. I have a hard time wording what I am talking about with this situation. It felt like, with the new rear and old front, They weren't centered maybe is what I am trying to express.

I have Michelin Pilot Powers on my '99 955i and wouldn't buy anything else. The amount of stick that these tires provide is unbelievable.

Bought mine from Sport Bike Track Gear and they were shipped to me in 3 days for $259 for the set. I had the wheels off the bike and my Triumph dealer mounted/balanced them for $40 for the pair.

I am an average street rider but these really help to enjoy the capabilities of the bike by adding a lot of responsiveness and, ultimately, safety.

Just my $.02. You know how opinions are, everybody has one.

trafficfixr, I'd just replace the rear with another M1. They don't wear well (rears in particular), but warm quickly and have excellant grip and feedback.

It's been my experiance that rears are replaced 2:1 compared to the fronts. If the front doesn't show any abnormal wear all should be fine.
