the thermostat helps regulate the internal coolant temp- keeps it stabilized for efficient operation of the engine and the control systems. operating outside the design paradigms can cause a number of problems, usually expensive. on fuel injection systems - mixture is a function of engine coolant temperature. too rich (cold- open loop, i.e., choke on) and wash out oil film in cylinder and contaminate lube oil - too lean (numerous causes), hot operation, high combustion chamber temps- internal engine damage. take yer pick and pay yer cash, mates. i say test an no-stat-condition on your own machine, if you feel confident- if it works out all right, cool- if not, live and learn. also, periodic coolant changes are good- no matter what coolant you use. don't believe the hype about long life coolants (especially dexcool), it all deteriorates over time and use. it is cheap insurance to replace it every year or two, compared to corrosion damage repairs. that being said, this is one reason i like my air-cooled ducati (don't get me started on 'oil' stuff). but, *****, that triumph just screams so nice...
