2yrs ago my dog, Comet, and I enjoyed camping out about a mile or so downhill from 'The Store' (Sands of Time?). As you head down from the store just past the dam turn right on a little nondescript noname road just before you cross the river. It's a beautiful little spot along the river. Comet and I were the only ones there in early Sept.
I found out about this place thanks to a worker at the store who took pitty on me and Comet after the owner was a jerk about not letting me leave my van in his lot while I rode 129. It was very early morning and maybe he was in a bad mood. But even after explaining how I loved my dog, I'd park in some shade leaving all the windows open, and I'd only be gone a short while, twice in a less than friendly tone told me he didn't want me leaving my van on his property! JERK! Later a local told me that so many people get hurt and airlifted out of there that they didn't want to be resposible for my van or Comet. Alaska plates on my van meant nothin to this guy. He's seen it all I guess.
It was still one of the best rides in my life! A longtime Dragon ridin local (also named Mark) that I'd met the night before around a campfire at the store DID crash his Aprilia RSV Mille leading me thru the Gap. Lucky for him it was a gentle lowside on a corner with runnout! Little damage (puctured sump) to bike and none to him except bruised ego after talkin smack all night.
Take care and have fun! Mark H.
