I have a 2000 daytona 955i... the earlier vin series.

When I pull in my clutch and rev my engine the tachometer registers correctly and doesnt hesitate. When i am driving in gear the tach operates normally until i hit 4,000rpm. Then after that it bobs and becomes sporadic until about 6,500 rpms and then with more throttle the needle drops to from 6500 to about 4,000 then back up to 7,000 then down to 5,000 then up to 10,000 then down to 6,000... its all over the place. What would be causing the normal operation of the tach with the clutched pulled in as opposed to it being sporadic when the bike is moving in gear??? Thanks for your help.

gooseeggtona955, If you have a mechanical tach. disconnect it at both ends, remove the cable, clean the cable and run a patch through the housing. Relube the cable with a thin coat of grease and re-install. Also make sure it's not binding anywhere.

It has the look of a mechanical tach but it is electronic. Like i said, It operates normally with the clutch lever pulled in, but when it is in gear it acts as i described.

gooseeggtona955, The '02 D955i and later (yours may be the same) uses the crankshaft position sensor input to the ECM. This in turn drives the tach from the ECM. Start at the tach's wiring harness and check connectors, check the ECM's connectors and the CPS' connectors if needed.

"Doesn any one have a solution?" --evil_panda

The circuit involves a few different items which have to be tested. gooseeggtona955 didn't post what, if anything was found.

Cool I have not gotten around to checking mine yet...

I posted erratic rpm guage behavior.
I have not gotten around to checking out my problem yet, maybe this weekend as it will probably be raining anyway.
If I find and prove where the problem was I will let ya'll know...
Mine is a 2001 Daytona 955i.
Oh, and if someone finds the problem before I do, please let me know what it was!!
Thanks guys!
A.P.K.

I would think wires from crank sensor to ecm would be good because you are getting no running issues. I would try the ecm out put for the tach I think the wire is red for tach signal, I would check connections at back of tach and connector right before tach.
Ecm connector pin also there is a main engine loom connection. looks like pin six red wire out of that connector. also has a 1.2k resistor in line some were. dont know were it is never had the loom split apart.
Looks like ecm connectors only have one red wire, the tach wire.
I will be taking my tac out of mine in a couple days if you want any pics. I also have a spare tac I would seel to you cheap if you want it.
