It appears I need to replace the clutch plates on my 96 D12. It's been slipping under hard acceleration for a year but now it fully disengages at the slightest letting out of the clutch handle causing difficult shifting. The bike just turned 60,000 miles so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.
I replaced the clutch fluid and changed the engine oil to rule those factors out but that made no improvement.

If anyone has had any experience with replacing a T3 clutch, what sort of a job is it? Will I need special tools, should I replace other components (bearings, seals, etc.) while I'm in there? Should I consider aftermarket clutch plates (Barnett)?
And how much $ are we talking about here?

any help would be appreciated,
Daytonacharlie

DaytonaCharlie, I haven't any experiance with a T3 clutch, but have changed clutch packs in the past and it looks like the '02 here is due...just starting to slip at 8K RPM and up.
Generally no special tools are needed, but there may be a special sequence of the drive/driven plates and they should be soaked in engine oil prior to installation. Do you have a service manual?

We've been unable to find any Barnett (I prefer) parts for the '02 so we'll likely go with EBC. It's best, IMHO to change plates (usually included) and springs (dealer) at the same time.

Brad,
Thanks for the input and yes I do have a shop manual. The instructions seem clear enough so it looks like I'll be able to do the job myself but it's pretty vague when it comes to the sequence. When I order the springs I'll get the scoop on plate sequence from the shop.

thanks,

I just copied the sequence from the plates I took out. To be honest its a doddle to change the clutch on a T3 engine.

I replaced the clutch plates in my D12 and was surprised to find that the pressure plate has the old Triumph logo from the Meriden days embossed on it! Really cool, way to go John Bloor. I assume all T3's have this.

Anyone else seen it?
