Hey all, just a quick question for those that bought a brand new model from a dealer.

Was your dealer adamant that you use a mineral based oil (10w40) for your first oil change due @ 1000km, and not to put in a full synthetic until at least 5000km?

I did a search but came up empty handed. Im well aware of debated break-in times / oils, but I'm curious as to why my dealer is going against a factory requirement (as far as the owners manual is concerned).

Would like to see if this is a dealer consensus or not. :???:

my new bikes came with oil in them....i thought that it was conventional oil. i heard it was so that the engine could scrub in and seal itself faster, if ya used synthetic then there was the chance that it might not break in like it should. as the synth. stuff produces way less friction, and that first initial couple hundred miles are to seat and mate everything up good...a little heat and friction is needed to do that. does that make sense?
as far as the 5000km mark....heck no...do it right after the first 500-1000 miles. i have always been told after the 500 mile mark....i would ask someone else at that shop or another shop....

I agree. In some cases it may be better to let an engine run longer with non-synthetic oil. Triumph controls your warranty so it's prudent to follow their instructions.

Yeah,But what about the shop manual saying
semi-synthetic for the 900 triple and full synth
for the 1200.Why is it allowed in a triple but
not the Four?

If I find my bikes down a quart and
all thats available is all mineral-based oil,I think
running it low would be harder on the motor than
a top-up of regular oil

my 96 Super III Daytona 886cc(900) called for the Triumph full synth. ....Not the the semi synth. as far as a possible difference...maybe one of the two (900 triple vs 1200 4 cycl.) maybe the 1200 holds more oil? and can operate cooler on a lesser oil..i don't know...maybe?

TriumphRocker, I would think that Triumph is just stating it's minimum requirements and full synthetic is good for all. The main difference between the 1200-4 and 900-3 lubrication wise may be the heat from the two inner cylinders, oil is in the longer engine, well, longer and oil cooler vs. engine size. Pure speculation on my part tho'.
