I just got my '04 955i (about 5k miles) back from a dealer service, and theres a noticeable whine which I think is coming from the front wheel at about 40mph. Above this speed the noise gets a higher pitch and is lost in the engine/wind noise. It seems entirely related to road speed.
I've never noticed it before.
It's not engine or gearbox related as it still happens in neutral with the clutch in and doesnt change with engine revs or gearbox engagement.
It doesn't seem brake related, brakes on/off makes no difference. I can't sense any additional rolling resistance.
The plan is to get it back to the dealer ASAP but I'd be interested if anyone out there had come across this before?
I'm thinking wheel bearing but it's odd it started straight after the service and surely the WB should last more than 5k?

Interesting.... :???:

Here's a long shot but: make sure the tire is mounted with the correct rotation direction. There should be an arrow on the side or something. I had a similar problem with a car tire on my M3.

If not that...uh...Faulty Bearing? :???: Maybe???

SPW, One thing I can think of is the speed-o-meter's drive on the left side of the front wheel. Possibly damaged when your bike was placed on stands? Anything rubbing?

I'd go for speedo drive too. My old S3 used to whine if you tightened the threaded collar that held the cable into the speedometer, too tight.

Thanks for responses!

It isn't the tyre and there's nothing obvious rubbing.

The speedo drive sounds most likely - the noise does somewhat resemble a dentists drill which would make sense.

Nickwiz (or anyone else) have you a torque setting for the collar, and did you have to replace washer/seal/ anything else after your overtightening episode?

SPW, I think Nick is referring to a cable that turns within a housing...Am I correct? The sensor on the '04 D955i is electro-mechanical with two wires running out of it, up the left fork leg, then to a connector under the nose fairing. It wouldn't take the shop 10 mins. to try another drive.

Oh Dad_, you've done it now. NZ is totally seperate from AU and they like it that way. Kind of like you or I being called an Okie (no offense Mad, you'd feel the same in reverse.)

SPW, For the record I back the All Blacks first and then ANYBODY playing against Australia.

Yeah the old T3 series S3 had a cable. I didn't use a torque setting I just backed the collar off until the whine stopped. The collar is on the instrument housing by the way not at the drive on the wheel.
