Its probably just the tire whining. My 02 had a similar sound coming from the same area as you described. The dealership service manager heard it too. Everything checked out OK on the engine, cables, and bearings. Tire pressure was down a few PSI, but after correcting it the sound was still there. After changing tire brands the sound is still there, but now its at a different pitch, a little quieter now thankfully. Maybe the sound just gets channeled up thru the fairing that makes it seem so loud

I guess it's safe to post this now since no-one is likely to read this thread anymore - but the problem was the chain which had been overtightened by the dealer. I posted the same message on the workshop board and one of the replies suggested this. The 'front wheel' bit was obviously a red herring, must just be the way the noise comes over to the rider. Anyway I adjusted the chain as per the service book and the problem is solved. Thanks for all contributions! SPW

Lousy Python reference here, but the dealership didn't, by chance, have you go and chop down the largest tree in the forest with that Herring, did they? :-D :hammer:

Sorry- couldn't resist!

Glad to see it's taken care of,
Ski

Chain is right. I had same problem on my new 04 daytona. must be common. The free play should be 40mm pretty baggy compared to most bikes. Interesting. I wonder if most dealers know this.
