any way to correct this?
front tire is a 120/70 so i don't think thats the problem

Really? I couldn't find anything to back that up on the 'net. My friend has a small Garman GPS that we've compared to the radar-powered "You're current speed..." boxes that the local police has set up around town, and they've always indicated the same speeds. I also use a GPS when flying and I have not been warned about inaccuracy there either. Where can I find more info on this?
Max-Moto, are you running stock wheel/tire sizes? It sounds like you're running something smaller than stock, or perhaps the sprocket has been changed out. The only way to get your speedo reading correctly would be to run stock parts, or by having it calibrated. We have a shop here in town that specializes in speedometer calibration, so maybe there's one near you too.
Cheers,
Randy

radar - but that isn't really the point of my question
front tire is the stock size and the odo seems about right, just the speedo is way off

This is where we break out the old "They're all like that, sparky :-D ". Yes they are. There's no way of changing it, either, unless you find a 120/80 front tire :hammer: .
Speedo on the 97-01 is front wheel driven so changing sprockets and whatnot don't matter. Why they instituted such a large error is beyond me but my 99 speedo says 80mph at a radar-verified 70mph.
Cheers, Lee S.

Max-Moto, My son just ordered a unit to correct his RC51. Go to rc51 and then go to the for sale link. He said you should be able to scroll down and find the ad and he also builds units for other brands.

If you're talking about the yellow box, it won't work. Most modern speedos are electronically driven either off the transmission or countershaft. His gen Daytona is old school cable driven off the front wheel and there's no changing the ratio. Besides, if he could, the speedo would be right but the odo would be off.
Cheers, Lee S.

If you really, really must have an accurate speedo, I've heard of guys using bicycle (no, seriously, keep reading!) speedos that use a sensor mounted on the front wheel. Anybody else heard of this?

Lee, I didn't know that, thanks for the info.
hidesert, The cycle computers on my road bikes are fairly sensetive to the relationship of the magnet and sensor positioning...but I bet it could be done. Other than that possibility, they are quite accurate when calibrated correctly. HMMM, did the first R1s have one?
