How about this; Ducati are pushing for a 1200cc twin for WSB as they reckon they are at peak performance with the current engine. It looks as if they will be allowed to develop and race this.
What if Triumph developed a 1200cc twin anyone fancy this?
I know Triumph are not racing orientated etc. etc. but but what if?

A 1200 TRIPLE would really be cool! Judging by the reviews of the 675, Triumph can keep the Triple narrow enough and light enough to be a real competitor. WSB would be a great venue for Triumph. More than likely, a 2007 1050 Daytona could still be a good track bike and an even better street bike. It looks like the 675 may still take a back seat to the Japanese 600 class bikes, especially on the track and even more so with what the Yamaha R6 has evolved to. I think the liter class would kill Triumph 1050 on the track. I hope Triumph spends the sparse profits they've made from my purchases toward putting a great bike on the street, and not have in sliding across Donnington tarmac.

Yeah, a 1200 triple would be good (I would probably go for it if it looked like the 675), but I fear it would not be allowed to race under FIM rules whereas the twin is lightly to get approval.
I think you are right the 1050 triple would not be able to stand the pace of the ltr 4's and the next daytona will be a triple.
A Triumph race team is a bit of a pipe dream at the moment but the 675 is defiantly a step in that direction despite the protestations of Triumph.
I guess I am in the minority, but I would love to see Triumph winning races as well as developing street bikes. I understand the cost is huge but just to see a British bike winning something again would be so cool. We had a brief moment with Norton and then Valmoto at the TT, but we are in a dry spell of epic proportion surely someone at Triumph must want to race bikes even if the corporate face says no.
Still I can dream!

I couldn't agree more. It would be great to see Triumph tweak the nose of the Moto GP/WSB crowd. As Rossi has proven, alot has to do with the rider. I think the 675 has some serious potential to do good things in AMA Formula Extreme with the right rider. I know the 675 can be very competitive with the current 600/636/749 crowd. It is definately a better street bike. That R6 is getting rave reviews as well, signaling Yamahas re-entry into the dominant spot. See what winning some Moto GP has done for them? Probably kick sales butt as well! I think on the right track with a skilled rider, the 675 can take 'em! I think the liter class going to 800cc next year will inhibit the development of anything this year. After all, there is a very good 1050 street bike in both the Sprint and Speed Triple.

If Ducati get a dispensation to race 1200 twins against 1000 fours, then the logical move for Triumph is surely to build an 1100 triple - assuming the powers that be agreed to change the rules to suit.
But will Ducati be competitive with a 1200 twin against 1000 fours? That's a capacity hike of only 20% over the fours; in the old WSB days, the twins enjoyed a 33% advantage.
Maybe 33% was too much, as the 750 fours weren't quite competitive. I reckon 20% will be too little - but having said that, Ducati is doing fine so far at the same capacity - though with more tuning allowed for the twins. NB, the 675 is 12.5% over the fours, the 749 25%. And the 675 as tested at Sepang was only seven thousandths of a second a lap behind the R6 - so small a gap as to be insignificant.
I reckon the ideal formula would be 1000 fours, 1125 triples, 1250 twins.
Alternatively, 1000 fours, 1150 triples, 1300 twins.

Yamah puts a little more money into racing than Triumph. On the street or with (hopefully) privateers, I think the 675 has the right stuff where it counts-torque!

everything i've read along with the two i've seen in phoenix make me think that the 675 will be right there with any of the 600cc fours in a similar state of tune. play with the suspension and brakes, and the let the racing begin. (oh, except in the us...only harley can get the rules changed here.) :cuss:

It's still alive! I would like to see a 1200 twin in Bonneville configuration called a "Super Twin". Would get one right now!
