hi all,
was round a friends last night, showing off the speed triple conversion, and got to talking about mods for his d1200.
He's going the other way, now rides alot more two up, touring etc, and as is common, finds the sporty riding position a bit of a strain.
for cost/time/effort extra, my money was on dropping the pegs lower and moving the clip ons above the top yoke.

at a quick glance it looks as though the clip ons, when raised would contact the fairing- i know people on the forum have done it- what did they find?
anyneed for longer cables?
what about the clip mounting bolt hole- did you need to stick a spacer under it when above yoke, as it isn't flush.

i apologise if there are numerous threads on this- guess i wasn't using the right phrases when searching.

rock on.

jc,
He can mount the stock clip-ons above the top yoke with no modification, all will fit just fine and just barely miss the fairing. It's quite a chore but it can be done at no cost. Is his D12 a 94, 95 or 96? The reason I ask because the 94 & 95 forks extend above the top yoke enough to be able to mount the clip-ons to them. On the 96 the forks are flush with the top of the yoke so you must slide the forks up enough to mount the clip ons to them thus changing the steering geometry by lowering the tripleclamps. I tried this for a while at first on my 96 and found the handling heavier feeling, didn't like it and moved them back.
There are other options like Helibars which work fine but I'm currently using Convertibars (www.convertibars.com) on my D12 because they are infinitely adjustable. You do have to buy a longer brake line for the mastercylinder and reroute the throttle cable though. I'm very happy with my setup and it's much much more comfortable to me.
Get your friend to check out my photo album for pics of my setup and get him to post me if he has any more questions.

Though on 94-95 D1200s the forks do protrude above the top yolk you still have to drop theyolks a tad to get a nicce flush fit. I did this on my old S3 Otherwise the Handle bar clamps protude above the top of the fork and create a nice little pool for water to collect. plus it looks grim. My suggestion for cheapness would be buy a set of cheap or second hand clip ons with a shallower clamp and mount them. Or ( I've seen this on one D12 ) get a set of the pre 93 trident bars ( pre 93 bars are lower than the later ones) they will fit staight on perfectly any breakers yard or autojumble.

cheers guys,
will pass on the relevant info. his is a 95 model, so has fork tube above the yoke.
i suspected you would have to drop the forks a bit to get them to 'fill' the clip on. I did this anyway when mine was a stock daytona, to quicken up the steering.
funnily enough i was looking at some trident clip ons and wondered if this would be a 'tidier' alternative- possibly would get away with original brake lines!?

keep on rocking
