Hi all,

I am hoping for some help, I am an ex pat living in the USA and have just purchased a 995i 03 model. Haven't had the chance to ride it yet due to a hand injury. Unfortunately, the battery die whilst trying to start it. Having re-changed the battery the bike starts and seems to run ok, but the ECM fault light stays on. I may have not have given the enough time for the ECM to power down between trying to start the bike. Any ideas of what I should do?

BTW the bike does have a power commander fitted, but I dont think this should affect the fault light!

Heres hoping for some suggestions

humbug, Remove the positive battery cable, turn the ignition on and cycle any and all switches and leave it for 30 minutes or so with the ignition switch at run. Reconnect the battery cable (turn ign. sw. off first) and if it's not a hard fault the lamp will extinguish after starting.

Brad, I will try that. I will also keep my fingers crossed that its not an hardware fault.

Many thanks.

I get a fault light when I put a dab too much fuel in...go figure. :???:

It goes out after 3 warm up-cool down cycles.

Brad,

Well I tried your suggestion and it didn't work.

Can't think how a flat battery cn give me a hardware fault. Looks like a trip to the Triumph dealer is in order.

I suppose the last resort is to unplug the Power Commander and see if it is that which is giving me the fault. Anybods on here have experience which said module?

Thanks in advance

I ran my battry down and charged it without disconnecting it from the system.

The ECU light came on and stayed on all the way to work (about 20 miles). After work it went off as soon as the engine started up. Based on this I would say don't panic.

humbug, That procedure (a generic one I use on my toy Mustangs) worked on my '04 to clear a hard fault sensed by a loose (+) battery cable.

After my bike's problem, the '02 also developed a loose (+) cable. It would stall (mine didn't) and generate a soft fault, as the lamp wasn't lit on a subsequent restart.

I think silvoor has a point. If your hand injury allows, ride it and see what happens on the restart. If you're still unable to ride, try this iffy idea...start the bike, let it warm a bit and then run the engine to 3.5K RPM for a few seconds and let it continure to run for a bit. After turning the engine off, restart and see if the lamp lights...or not.

Most times it will take three cycles from dead cold to operating temp to extinguish the light , and sometimes it appears to come on just because it wants some attention.
