need a bit of advice to help cut back on time stood in the pouring rain switching my yokes!!!

got my speed triple yokes (last piece of jigsaw in doing the conversion!!!)

however as i said, its now pouring with rain- surprise- and i dont have a garage. so had a quick go at planning the switch, but have come up head scratching.

removed the front wheel and slackened all pinch bolts on yokes and bars, removed the top steering stem nut and dropped the forkes clear of the top yoke.

yoke is still on with no signs of budging, is it the head bearing adjuster nuts still locking it in place?

i'm probably being a 'spanner' but i can't see how these would anchor the yoke in place. i'm also tired and wet, so its probably glaringly obvious fatigue n' all.....but any help would be apreciated.

i was hoping to get away with not having to tamper with the head bearing nuts, as this also means filing out about 2mm from the mountain bike spanner i had to make it fit.

i take it is possible to remove the top yoke, but leave bottom yoke and steering stem in place...?

WHICH BRINGS ME TO PART 2!!!!

have been unofficially advised that sticking a speed trip top yoke on to a daytona steering stem and bottom yoke can't happen.

had a good look at the components, and i'm hard pushed to see why not.

anyone know any different?!

cheers for all the ongoing help, hints, advice etc!!!!

Think you'll find you have to change top and bottom yolks as the Speedtriple has steeper angle on the forks than the Daytona. The yolks are offset to acheive this. So if you only change the top yolk the holes wont match up. The forks will come through the bottom Daytona yolk at one angle and won't match up with the top yolk as that will be set at a different ( steeper ) angle. Thats why Speedtriple's steer more quickly than Daytonas.

As for getting the top yolk off the clip ons are bolted to the top yolk underneath. Look underneath and you will see the bolt. Its there as an added precaution to stop the bars twisting round the fork legs. You will need to unbolt the clip ons and also undo their pinch bolts too.

Interestingly the speedtriple doesnt have them. It has cast lugs on the underside of the top yolk to prevent the bars twisting.

Hope that helps. Working on bikes without a garage is a nightmare. Every house I've bought has sacrificed something in terms of the house just so as I could afford one with a garage!

cheers nick,
yep, the lack of garage has been a pain. my old place was a ground floor flat with french doors opening onto the garden- so just wheel the bike into the front room!!!
its a sacrifice- but hey, don't want to be working on the bike when the suns out- want to be riding!!!

had a feeling i'd have to change the whole thing- remember reading the triple had a steeper rake. doh!

i noticed the triple didnt have the extra holes in the yokes to bolt the clip ons. i removed the bolts the secure the clip ons to the yokes, but it didn't lift off as i expected.....
i guess a bit of wiggling and jiggling is in order?

cheers for the help!!!

Don't think so. But aren't the early Trophy and Daytona yolks the same? Look at the daytona yolk and you will find four blanked off threaded holes. These are used on the Trophy to mount the bars.
