New guy here, and as I'm new to the Triumph scene, I thought I'd pose you experts a few questions.

I recently bought a '96 Daytona 900, 12,000 miles. Decent shape but needs some TLC. My questions are:

1. Are there any issues with this particular year/model that I need to be aware of?

2. Can any competent wrench handle basic maintenance issues such as valve adjustments, etc? Should I use the dealer?

3. Can you provide me some links to used parts dealers? I need to replace a mirror and the inserts that go between the side fairings and the tank (not sure what they're called).

4. I know that since this is an older bike, aftermarket parts will be few and far between. If you could provide some links for this kind of "stuff," it'd be a huge help.

Thanks in advance for any help you can throw my way. Can't wait to get this pig on the road!

Eric

Sprag clutch might be an issue. Trawl back through previous posts there should be plenty of posts on the subject.

So far as the sprag clutch issue mentioned, it seems that if it is going to fail, it does it when you try to start the bike with a weary battery, so keep it well charged.
The basic spannering things like valve clearances can be done at home, but have a Haynes manual or similar and take your time. I'm nothing special as a mechanic, but have managed to do all that kind of stuff with mine and I haven't broken it yet.
Don't know about suppliers in the States, but Sprint Manufacturing in the UK are good guys, and I have seen posts from guys over in your side of the water who have mentioned them and been happy with shipping costs, etc.

edehn,
I think those inner fairing parts are for sale right now on ebay.

Basic maintenance is pretty straightforward. I strip my 1200 down and take it to the shop for valve adjustments tho. If you have the tools and a set of shims you could do the valves yourself, it's not rocket science.

Some aftremarket parts that I know of:
exhaust (http://www.smfcycles.com/Products.html),
seat (Corbin,Sargent), jet kit & air filter (K&N), and suspension upgrades (Race Tech, Penski, Hagon)

I've had good luck finding parts on ebay but you have to be patient, from time to time someone will sell parts off a wrecked or salvaged bike.

Welcome to the group,
cheers,
dc

Thanks a ton for the info! I bought the inner fairings but am having some trouble mounting them up. Nickwiz told me that the left side should mount up, but the left side won't because the 1200 was a 4 cylinder. Again, thanks for the help!
