Hi All,

Well, following NVBOOZEFIGHTER's lead I installed a 17T counter sprocket on the '04 this afternoon. The sprocket is from Sprocket Specialists, p/n 598-17.

It took me about three hours 'cause I had to go get a 36mm socket and undo the rear sprocket to get enough slack to pull out the c/s sprocket. I lubed the c/s sprocket with some high temp grease before buttoning everything up.

How's it work? What's the difference? Well, the bike feels lighter...if that can make any sense! A half throttle quick shift from first to second lifted the front tire briefly...it didn't do that before. It's only ~5% taller, but seems to suit the torque curve (plateau) quite nicely. Bike's not buzzy at cruising speed, but I'm going to have to re-tune my ear to keep from trying to upshift out of sixth.

flatspins, As promised two tanks through and the first was 43.0 MPG and the second 44.020 MPG. This is pretty much in line with fuel consumption before the change which had most tanks in the 43-45 MPG range.

I also try to get it to go a gear beyond 6th occasionally myself. If and when I get a new chain and sprockets, I'll probably go back to 18 front and 2 less in the rear like I had the
T595. I thought that was perfect. And I may drop down to a 520 chain.

Yeah, if it's hooked up to the Vincent!

AK955, My old 18T was installed on the '02 D955i. The combo is very close with it's 44T rear...2.44 ratio for the 18/44 and 2.47 for the 17/42.

I am going to keep an eye on the chain guide atop the swingarm to make sure it isn't wearing abnormally with the smaller c/s sprocket (only down-side I can think of). If it is, I'll go the 18/44 route w/520 conversion.

What, YOU can't tell a .03 difference in ratio? J/K lol I thought the 6th gear ration was the same on the T595 and the 955's. It just seems like I wish there was one more gear on my 955 a lot more than I ever did on the T595! Strange. MH
