Hi Everyone,

This is my first post, prompted by my purchase of a `95 Daytona 1200 just last week.

Hopefully, you'll be able to see a pic of this beaut if I uploaded the pic correctly.

This is the second bike I've owned, and based solely on the few miles I've been able to log in the cold weather, I couldn't be much happier.

The former owner was a 65 year old, long time rider. He owned 30 bikes, which makes him a prime candidate for Motorcycles Anonymous, IMO, but it also means he treated this bike right and put very few miles on it, ~ 3400 total.

It runs great, although it's going to take me some time to get accustomed to the power. My former bike was a Yamaha Virago 920, and while it could get up and go when needed, the Triumph is in a different league altogether. :-D

There's one thing that bothers me -- the foot peg position. I'm 6' tall and the pegs just seem too high for me.

I did a lot of searching (both on and off the forum) and although options appear to exist, they're also on the expensive side and can't afford it.

There has been mention of utilizing Buell XB Lightning pegs as a cheap and effective way to lower the pegs 1 inch. However, the thread in question was talking about later model Daytonas.

Does anyone know if the Buell peg modification would work on a `95 Daytona? If not, does anyone have other suggestions? I really like this bike, but I noticed that the pegs were beginning to cause some discomfort (as well as just not feeling "right") after just a few miles. I can foresee this becoming a big issue, especially on longer rides, and I think that I have to get it taken care of one way or the other.

Any insight or suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks!
David

I don't have a clue about your peg quandary, but you have a nice ride.

Welcome aboard!

Hi David

This bike is going to feel very different to ride from a Virago. All I can tell you is that I'm 6' 1" and find my 1200 all day comfortable. Just relax when you ride it and don't try to fight it.

Stick with it for a while and see if you settle into it's natual position, you may be surprised to find that it fits you after all.

Regards

David

You should be able to use the peg set-up for a Trophy or Trident from that same year. I had planned on doing that for my Speed Triple. If you look at your Daytona you will see holes for a lower set up. I guess they used the same frame for the Trophy, Trident and Speed Triple. I think I purchased a set of used pegs - whole brake and shift mechanism - from a Trident that may still be in my attic. I will look tonight when I get home. If you are interested I would be willing to sell. Let me know.

Definately the best solution just mount the pegs in the lower position and make up a gear linkage to suit. Or simpler fit the Trophy parts from a Trophy of the same year. Happy riding. Don't know about the US but 1200s seem rare as hens teeth over here in UK welcome a small but discerning group

Welcome David, The D1200 is indeed relatively rare and a terrific find. I think you will find it to be a keeper as many of us have. I have to agree on searching out the pegs and linkages from a Trophy or perhaps a Trident of the same vintage. I believe they will fit with minor fiddling. I think there are a couple of folks on this sight that have done this mod successfully. Ride safe!

d12,
Welcome to the group. I've made the mod of installing the Trophy foot pegs on my D12. I guess you could get used to the stock riding position but fitting the pegs from the Trophy totally transforms the riding position and yes, while it's a bit expensive it'll be the best money you can spend. Then there's the clip-ons...
I've spent the last 8 years fiddling (admittedly probably too much) with every aspect of my 1200's riding position and at 6' myself I completely understand your predicament.

Check my photo album and let me know if you're interested in making any of the mods I've made and if so I'll post more details. BTW your bike is stunning!

Hi,

I was the one fooling around with the Buell peg mod as they are cheap and the ZRX 1200 guys (I own one too) commonly make this mod as it gives a whole inch of drop. I looked at adapting the pegs for an 05 Sprint ST, but dropped the idea as the parts were just too dissimilar to bother, even with a skilled machinist at my disposal.

I HAVEN'T looked at the swap for the Daytona 1200, because I'm only 5'9", and the rider pegs height hasn't bothered me. (The carbs are an ENTIRELY different story!) I have some spares around here and will compare the Buell pegs and see if it looks like a relatively straightforward mod.

In lieu of the Trident/Trophy/Sprint pegs one suggestion I can make is to rear peg to give your legs a break. On long highway trips it really takes the pressure of my legs and back for a stretch.

It would not be difficult to make a peg mount with the dimensions you require. The peg mount on the T3/4 Daytonas is very simple in construction. Having a weld shop add a new mounting point an inch lower would not be difficult or expensive and you could make it however you wanted.
I have not lengthened my peg mounts but did modify them for Tarozzi controls.

You're gonna love this bike long time! I just purchased mine this January and have been lustingly polishing it (the bike, guys!) all winter. Classy, powerful and VERY unique! Stick with the great advise the veterens at Daytona Deliberations provide and you will enhance your fun. Enjoy!
