My service manual says I have a 25 liter tank (including reserve), the low fuel light comes on with 7 liters, and the reserve tank holds 5 liters. My question is does the low fuel light come on when only 7 liters are left or when 7 liters PLUS the 5 liters of reserve tank are left? Next time the light comes on I'll zero my trip mileage and find out for sure, but I'd like to run out of gas near the house.

The light will come on when 7 litres are left otherwise it would be when half the tank is left!
I can get around 200miles (depending on the roads) before the warning light comes on. Never hit reserve yet.

Daytona, you say you get 200 before the light comes on?
I'm consistantly hitting between 140 and 160. My mileage now after modifications is a bit better than the stock setup was but the light still is coming on about the same time. I do not hammer the bike and most of my mileage is highway. Anyone else getting 200 before the light? I wonder if there is that much of a difference between the 900's and 1200's. I'm seeing between 38 and 42 mpg.

190 to 200 miles before the light comes on isn't unusual. Think the most I've managed is a little over 210. I'm generally considering filling up around that mark so I've never taken it down to using the reserve position. I always try to ride smoothly and consistantly and I use the mid-range rather than the top-end (I also lke the sound this creates!). In the car, my daughter suffers from travel sickness and my driving style has adjusted to making good progress as smoothly as possible and this also reflects in the way I ride the bike. I also get very good fuel economy in the car because of this.
Perhaps the cooler climate over here helps as well?

I have never gotten close to 200 miles before my light has come on either. That's even when I am taking it easy. I guess our 1200's are just gas piggies compared to the 900's.

No idea of how the 1200s work out for fuel consumption. All the guys I know have triples. I can recall a mate filling up his early (single headlight model) Trophy 900 and he'd used less fuel than I had on a fast run back down from Scotland. We'd ridden up with the rattlers and decided to have a bit quicker trip back....
I've been over to Dallas and know for a fact our climate is slightly cooler here in the UK! Perhaps the cooler, higher density air being drawn into the engine helps efficiency?

yea, 7+5=12 which is about half 25, having the low fuel light on at 1/2 tank would be pretty meaningless. Thanks for the replies.
