Unless the user has the correct tools and skills, DIY of the connections can often end up creating more issues than solves - that is why I recommend to purchase the OEM cable (and because it is great value!) or go with cables pre-made by someone skilled in such assembly .

Excellent point.

Of course, I had a good teacher: A certain Scottish-American with French connections!

Update

The Yamaha R/R and the Triumph Link Lead finally arrived so installed them today. At idle I'm getting 13.45V and at 5000rpm it's 13.5v, which is less than .5v more than the original R/R readings, the new R/R is much cooler than the original. I'm thinking that I need to do the direct wire from the R/R to the battery with the in-line 30amp fuse as I'm hoping to run both a heated vest and heated grips so I think I'll need more power.

Does this mean that the plug from the wiring harness that plugs into the R/R is left redundant and all the fuses remain the same in the bike?

Take bike for a good run and measure again
Yes, if you wire directly to battery just leave all main harness wiring as is and simply connect R/R outputs to battery instead of the connector plug

Okay - thanks. It may be a few days before I get to get out for a ride - I'm living in the rainforest on the Wet Coast!

Finally had the time to complete the R/R & link lead direct to the battery modification. Now I'm getting 14.2v + at idle and at 5000rpm. Here's a couple of photos of the modification - modified the Triumph link lead and made up an aluminum heat sink mounting plate. Now just have to sort out the cold start issue!
