Rear shock absorber replacement

Problems with the suspension on the bike (2001 D955i with dual swing arm - usually referred to as the 2002 model)

Anyway, I have no compression damping control, so I suspect a seal or whatever has popped in the remote unit, after 100mile trip and loads of bouncing around whilst the problem was diagnosed, the unit and valve remained stone cold.

So I am faced with one of the following options:

Second hand from eBay
Rebuild
New unit

As I am toying with selling the bike in the short term, I am minded towards a second hand unit, don't worry, the idea is to replace this bike with a newer 1050 Tiger

Are the shocks interchangeable from SSSA to DSSA?

This is what is coming up in my search, are any of these suitable?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_fr...ona+955i+shock

Many thanks for any assistance that may be offered.

you need a shock with a fork type bottom mount for a DSSA bike. The SSSA shock will not fit.

Many thanks, one ordered and should be delivered tomorrow.

Will hopefully be able to get the bike on the ramp at the weekend and swap the units out.

Is there anything in particular I need to be aware of?

you need a stand that supports the bike other than via the rear wheel, ie an abbastand, or the bike will be in a heap on the floor when you pull the shock out.

This and a small jack is useful too to make slight adjustments to the swingarm to align all the linkages etc to get the bolts in/out.

Oh and if it's anything like mine(SSSA) the swing arm-drop link spindle is an absolute nightmare to get out. You need an M14 bolt to wind it out (or a slide-hammer).

Nothing like the SSSA as there was loads of room.

No abba stand so I did the following:

Scaffold trestle either side of the bike, lift the bike with rear paddock stand, remove rear wheel. Stacked two lengths of 2x2 across the trestles directly above the cross member the shock mounts to. I removed the infill panels either side before threading a 1" ratchet strap around on either side and over the 2x2's

Tighten down ratchet strap until the back end lifted up off paddock stand, tied off both pillion pegs to steady the bike, remove paddock stand.

Drop out the lower mounting bolt (T50 +14mm) the lower link bar (T55+17mm), undo brake pedal and reservoir bolts, jubilee clip and top bolt (8mm hex + 14mm), small prybar to pop it out and then feed everything though the swing arm.

Replacement was the reverse, bit of a mess on sorting out the routing of the remote compression damper through the brake hose, and then bolt it up and torque up the bolts.

No more jarring of the spine over bumps.

SC, The 2nd gen. 2001 my D955i has become known as a "2001NS", NS for new style. Be sure to measure in some way how far the locking nut is from the top of the threaded area on the old shock. It's a PIA to adjust sag with the shock on the bike.

Bless Triumph for going back to the SSSA; Made for a boatload of Ohlin DSSA shocks at clearance prices in '04.
