Bikes are only as good (fun) as the roads we ride on. This topic is intended to identify the 10 best roads for motorcycle riding world wide. The rules are simple. The roads cannot be a fantasy (cities may have some spectacular roads, but traffic makes riding impossible). A great road may be short, but anything less than 10 miles is not a great road, only a couple of terrific turns. Scenery is nice (and rates extra points), but you can get scenery on a tour bus. Dirt roads can be lots of fun, but not on a Daytona.

First nomination:
The Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse in Austria. (check it out at: http://www.grossglockner.com/highalpineroad/motorcycle/) The Grossglockner is a series of hairpins leading up to the highest peak in Austria with unbelievable views when you get to the top.

Second nomination:
Highway 3 south from Yreka and to California coast via Highway 36. A classic California road that takes a full day and offers leaves a lifetime of motorcycle memories.

After looking at the map and pictures I may have to take a trip to North Carolina in the near future. Definitely a candidate for the top ten. :yayyy: :yayyy:

As soon as I feel the wife is capable, I'm hitting it up. I have seen multiple vids of rides through the gap, and it looks awesome. Turn after turn after turn after turn.

Got to be the N85 the Route Napolean in the South of France from Grenoble to Gap and then Gap to Cannnes.
Also round Gap there are loads of Cols which are superb I would recommend the Col du Vars and Col d'Izoard

The 258 from Monchau to Nurburg and the 257 from Nurburg to Cochem.

But the absolute best (and scariest) road ever is the old Nurburgring circuit the Nordschleife

I've run U.S.129 ( tail of the dragon ) one week each of the last two years. I can honestly say this would have to be in the top 3 worldwide, let alone top 10.

I'll be going every year from now on until I can't physically get a leg over a bike anymore !!!

Tail of the Dragon

Not to mention the miles and miles of surrounding roads that are almost as good !!!

ajdaytona900: *****. I was in southern France this summer and went from Turin to Le Puy en Velay, via Grenoble. I should have turned south at Grenoble and hit the N-85. Maybe next time.
I'm surprised that no one has yet to identify the passes out of Andermatt in Southern Switzerland (Furka, Gottard, Oberalppass Grimselpass and Sustenpass - one of the best riding days of my life 4 or 5 years ago). Anything in England, Wales or Scotland? I am thinking of flying into London in 2007 and heading for the best roads in GB. Suggestions?

Just south of Reno,NV there is a little road called Geiger grade or HWY431 leading to Virginia City. If you want a variation on turns from nasty hairpins to med. length sweepers, this is the road. Then on the backside going down is the "truck route" that I've never seen a single big rig on in 6 years of riding. The "truck route" is where all the GSXR's, Suzuki's and Hondas go to play, lots and lots of 20 mph turns here and some spots where if you just look straight down the road, all you see is a HUGE drop into the valley below. If anyone ever wants to test their bike, this is a great road. I just got my 955 so I haven't pushed it to the limit yet, but some people do and every year there are about 6 or 7 deaths on this road alone. Mostly inexperience and way too much bravado do it to them. And at the top is Virginia City, the old west in all its glory. And after you run the main road a few times and think you've got it licked, there is a road that shoots off at the begining of town that doesn't have a center line and is the NASTIEST bit of road I've ever drug my Harleys floorboards on (almost took myself out a few times and went off road twice last run down) but it's called Six Mile Canyon so I guess this road doesn't count HA! the longest straight is about 50 - 60 FEET long.

I haven't been to Scotland but i hear they have some great roads (its a bloody long way from London though). If i were you I would head for Wales. The roads from Chepstow in south wales upto Ludlow (throught the Wye Valley) are fantastic to ride. Also north wales has loads of brilliant roads, they are heavily policed on a Sunday but Monday to Friday they are empty and beautiful, I ave a mate called Lee who runs a motorcycle tour business in North Wales look at www.amch.co.uk. He took me and a couple of guys riding for a week and it was incredible hes a great guy and an awesome rider (hes raced at international level). He can sort you with whatever u want to do.

As much as I enjoyed the Dragon and we're putting up named roads nominations in the region I have to vote for the Cherohala Skyway. Not too far from the Dragon and, when I rode it, completely empty, mile after mile of elevation changes, fast sweepers and incredible views.
