Hi All

Welcome to my first post. I'm about to move my faithful FJ1200 on and replace it with a 1200 Daytona. Thing is I use my bike for business trips as well as pleasure and would love to stick some hard boxes on (like daytonacharlie's Givi set up)

How do I do this (lower the silencer etc.)? :???:

Any help gratefully received.

Regards

David

Hey Bowenman,

Welcome! Glad you could join us!

So far, I have mostly used soft luggage on my Super III for Touring.
If you can find them there are package racks that are mounted to the back of your bike. To that you can mount a universal Givi top box. This was done to the 1200 I used to have.

Well, just like that I got a 1200 SE on e-bay today!

Originally from Houston TX, it now lives in Glasgow, looks mint and has only covered 7,000 miles with it's original owner.

Can't wait to pick it up next week sometime :-D

Any more suggestions on the luggage issue?

David

p.s. anyone want to give my FJ a good home. I can keep both if I sleep in the shed by all accounts

I saw that se on ebay, looked really good.
I got mine off ebay and although not perfect by the time i sorted it out it was still a deal.
Ive got some nonfango panniers on mine and they work fine, the rack is solid and not as obtrusive as givi and the luggage is as good as if not better than givi.
nonfango arnt around anymore but the frames still turn up on ebay.
nb. if you lower the silencers you need to change the rear footpeg brackets for sprint or trophy ones.
p.s can you let me know if your bike was as good as it looked.

Hi Steveo

I'd love to see a pic of your boxes mounted, pm me for my e-mail address if you have one on file.

The bike is like new, stunning condition with the exception of the odd scruffy fastener where it's been standing unused. I will post a pic in the next week or so once I get it back from my mate, who has given it the once over and changed all the fluids while the FJ was making it's exit from the garage. It went tonight so I will pick the missile up in the next couple of days.

Regards

David

Hi David,
I am not sure if you would like the looks but my personal favorite is the Ventura pack system it combines a soft luggage system with a tail rack. I use mine when I do long road trips on my speed triple (96), I use two of the large bags one facing forward and the other hanging on the tail rack giving more than enough clothes for a long road trip, here is a link to the sight http://www.ventura-bike.com/
as I said I love mine it has lasted for years and the big thing that sold me was that on t300 series triumph the side panels stick out beyond the seat and my first set of soft luggage scratched up the side panels, I believe Hinkley has expressed the same problem on some of his postings in the past. Also when I go into the hotel for the night I can loosen two thumb screws and remove the whole tail rack leaving only the side brackets on when you go out for dinner. also I have not had water problems like you might think, even in pouring down rain on a trip thru Boston. I hope this helps let me know if you like th design.

David,
Daytonacharlie here, just stumbled upon your post about luggage for the Daytona 1200. I installed a set of GiVi E45 panniers on my Daytona and am very happy with them. They're watertight and very durable. I bought the panniers, wingrack, side mounting frames and because GiVi doesn't make a specific fitting kit for the Daytona I fabricated my own out of 1" x 3/16 x 3'-0" flat plate from the local hardware store. I had to lower my silencers 5" at the ends by bending the pipes (pressing down on the end with my foot) until they were in the desired position and installing a 3" long extension bracket at the silencer bracket. This was so that the tops of the panniers would be at the same level as the top of the seat when mounted. I made the mounting hardware by cutting the plate strips into different lengths with a hacksaw, drilling mounting holes, grinding and rounding off the rough edges with my bench grinder, bending each bracket to fit then painting them flat black. It looks as good as any factory kit and is very strong.
GiVi makes a fitting kit for the old Sprint (part #Y665) that will fit the Daytona but you would have to bend the pipes down even further, almost flat, to make the kit work. I had to make brackets to relocate the turn signals between the bags as well.
Let me know if I can be of any more help, I can send photos of my mounting hardware if you'd like.

Cheers,
Chuckster

A 1200 with nonfango boxes.

Scorpion race cans fitted no need to lower those pipes!

The rack looks like this

Much better than those big ugly Givi ones!

Hope this helps.

Hey Nickwiz,
Could you post a photo of your Daytona with the nonfango boxes from the rear of the bike. I'm curious to see how much room you have above your pipes. Also what size (ltr.) are they? I've never seen them for sale here in the states. Too late for me as GiVi was the only game in town when I was looking.
I had mounted my GiVi boxes at first without lowering the silencers but they made the bike too top heavy (heavier) and sat above the top of the seat. Then I decided to reinstall them (all new hardware) this time lowering the silencers. A lot of trouble I must admit but the end result is better for me.
I use my large 45 ltr. boxes for touring and a smaller set of 36 ltr. boxes around town.
The 45ltr. will hold 2 full face helmets each.
If you keep stripping your bodywork off you'll soon have a speedquatro.

cheers

I think the side boxes are 40liters. Will check for you and get a photo of the rear with them fitted. Clearance is about a couple of inches. Watch this space.

Pity about them being discontinued as I could o with a new top case the lock having finaly given up the ghost.
