I am looking for some help on tightening the chain on my bike. I just installed a new front sprocket, down a tooth, and I need to tighten my chain. I think I have the part to do it, half crecent looking tool. I can see where it needs to go behind the rear sprocket, but I can't get it to budge one bit. I am thinking that I am missing something, maybe a bolt to loosen, I don't know. You feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Mike,

There's a pinch bolt you need to loosen. It's the 17mm bolt at the backend of the hub. When loosened, you ought to be able to adjust the chain tension pretty easily, though it may be a little hard to adjust it exactly as you want. Just keep giving small adjustments, tightening the pinch bolt each time until you've got it where you want it.

Common wisdom seems to be to have the chain set at the loose end of the spec rather than at the tight end. Too tight will cause early stretch of the chain and wear on the sprockets. Chain slack is needed as the suspension compresses and increases the distance slightly between the sprockets since the front sprocket and swing point aren't exactly the same. Sit on the bike and you can see some of the slack disappear.

Loose chain can cause a little bit of snatch in transitions between on and off power - normally not noticeable.

Good luck.

Generally you want between 3/4 to 1 inch of play in your chain. It works easier with two people. Have someone sit on the bike, and the second person uses a ruler to measure the chain start position and then lift the chain to it's max tight spot and it should be between 3/4 to 1 inch.

Good luck,

Mike
