Hi everyone, I'm the proud owner of a 2004 Daytona 955i and have a question regarding the rear sprocket. In an attempt to gain better fuel consumption i fitted a K&N filter and a power commander i also purchased a rear sprocket with one less tooth (42 down to 41) this was on the recommendation of someone in the know or so they say.
Question is, is it ok to do this?, do i need a new chain? and what effect will it have on the engine and gearbox.
You will have slightly less torque at the rear wheel and slower acceleration. Chain should probably be OK.
Most people go the other way and add teeth which makes a significant difference in perfromance. I run a 45 on mine.
Not many buy the Daytona with fuel consumption as a primary concern!
Thanks for the reply i know it seems strange but i use the bike mainly for commuting between the UK and Belgium so i do a lot of motorway miles so fuel is at the moment my main concern.
IMHO 1 tooth down at the back will not make that much difference. If you want a lazier engine, keep the 41 at the back and go up 1 in the front = 19/41. With a larger front sprocket you will find a slight reduction in chain wear, as well as on the swing arm protector strip. Have a look at http://www.gearingcommander.com/ for more details for the gearing changes etc. Be warned though: with this combination, the Daytona will not pull a true 309.2 Kph!!! :-0) As D'Ecosse rightly says, "Most people go the other way and add teeth which makes a significant difference in performance." I indeed run 17/43 = spirited acceleration and a reduced top end of 263.8 kph! Just about right for me. Yep, a slight premium to pay in terms of petrol consumption, but then as the Triumph motto rightly states "Go your own way!" We are all different, and obviously your needs on those wonderfully fully-lit Belgian motorways are different. Enjoy! >Deano
