04 955i running hot

What is the normal operating range for the Daytona?

I just did two track days and replaced the coolant with water and water-wetter. The bike ran a little warmer than normal at the track but that was to be expected and it never over heated.

I put the bike back into street trim yesterday, replaced the water with water and coolant, and took it for a spin. Even though it was only 70 outside the bike got as hot as 258 in traffic 0_0! so I turned around and parked it so I didn't cook the motor.

Today I ran it with radiator cap off the blow out any air that may have been trapped in the system and topped it off(I thought it may have been low) and it is running a little cooler now but still idles around 223 and is ~210 at speed. It is only 50 outside right now. Is it supposed to run this hot? I bought the bike in December but only really got to put any serious riding on it until now, most of which has been at the track.

HoyaXC07, That's too hot. Did you use the bolt on the RHS of the radiator to burp the system? Did you drain the cylinder block (bolt LHS). 50-50 mixture?

Fortunately we don't need to remove coolant for trackdays around here.

I did not use that bolt nor did I drain the block, I just unhooked the hose at the bottom connected to the water pump.

The fan does come on around 218.

Why change the coolant to water for track days, is there a reason for it?

L007, It's a safety issue, H2O will evaporate if spilled onto the track, coolant, often ethyl glycol doesn't and is quite slippery.

Thanks! good to know that. Last week I went to Interlagos circuit for a riding course but that was not required as well. Sorry for hijacking the thread

BTW, in my recent experience on heavy traffic w/ modded engine map but temporarily with stock exhaust, I saw the water temperature rising until close to the redline. Found this to be kindda hard situation, tried to turn off the engine but temperature wanted to explode and had to turn it on again. The solution was to find an empty street and put the radiator to work - temp came back to normal quickly at 60km/j. Next week new exhaust will be fitted and I hope to see temperature back to normal.

Is there a proper procedure to burping the system? Just undo the bleed bolt on the side and run it for a bit then top it off again?

HoyaXC07, The two times I've changed coolant I left the burping bolt off while filling, ran the engine 'till the level dropped in the radiator, added the coolant mix to the radiator and buttoned everything up.

The location the cylinder block drain bolt and the burping bolt suggests the procedure is best done on the sidestand.
