2001 Daytona 955i Problem - Need help!
Hi all, I recently purchased a 2001 Daytona 955i that was a recovered theft bike. Since the weather here in Ohio has recently been nice, I've set about fixing, cleaning, and replacing worn parts. It still needs a good cleaning, but I've replaced fluids, cleaned up the gas tank and done the basics to start it up and see how she runs. With a new battery, fully charged, all I get is some clicking and the starter seems to barely spin ... if it does at all. I've uploaded a video of the noise, here is the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThGOzrMuPus
I need help guys, does it sound like the starter is bad... maybe the solenoid?
I've checked the fuses, rechecked and charged the battery. I'm at a loss and instead of replacing parts and hoping for the best, I thought I'd turn to some people that may have seen and heard this before.
Also, I'm going to attach a picture, when I started pulling parts off, I found a plug that wasn't plugged in. It is taped to the fuel rail area and dead center of the picture. Can anyone with a Daytona 955i take a look and see where that plug is plugged in on their bike and let me know. Thank you all so much for your help!
Jim

Jim, Sounds like the engine may be hydrolocked. You may need to pull the 'plugs and see if it'll spin with the starter. (This can happen if it was laid over on it's LHS.) Put a shop towel over the 'plug holes because if there's oil in the cylinder(s) it can spray oil.
The wiring harness has an extra fuel injector and coil lead because the harness was partially used on some four cylinder models...what I was told.

Brad,
Ok, so pull the spark plugs and see if the motor will turn over... I'll go out and do that shortly. If that works, put the plugs back in and its "cured"? What if that doesn't work? Thanks for your help!
Edit: I was just thinking, all the plastic is unscratched and looks in good shape. If it was laid over, it'd be surprised. What else could be the problem? And could you explain hydrolocking? Thanks and sorry for the extra questions.
Jim

Brad and everyone else, forgive me, I should know better. I did a search on Hydrolocking through the forums and have my answers about it. I'll give your idea a try and let you know how it goes. Thanks again for your help,
Jim

Jim, Hydrolock is when a fluid (non compressable) enters the cylinder(s) preventing the starter from turning the crankshaft because the effected cylinder can't reach TDC. For the first gen D955 the crankcase breather runs from the LHS of the engine to the LHS of the airbox. Even if the bike is gently laid down on the LHS oil will migrate through the breather hose to the airbox.
This may not be the problem, but should be checked first to prevent a bent/broken connecting rod if one of the cylinders fired forcing a revolution of the crankshaft.

Well, that was fun, but no luck. It still wouldn't turn over, it makes the same noise it did in the video. Valves look a bit carbon covered on some and clean on others. Piston heads (from what I could see) look a bit carbon covered as well (black). Tiny bit of oil on the middle spark plug threads, other two looked good.
What would be my next step?

Will your engine turn over if you put it in gear & rotate the back wheel?
(Easier with plugs out)
Just to be sure your engine is not seized!
Get that confirmed at least to begin with

I've kept the plugs out, just in case. I tried to put it in gear and move it, but in the small space I have in my garage, all the back wheel does is slide. I should be getting a single sided stand this week and can answer this question better then. Anything else I should do in the mean time? Thanks,
Jim

If back wheel is sliding with the plugs out, sure sounds like engine is locked .....
Another trick to get back wheel off ground is just to pull over on side stand while positioned on left side of bike;
reach over and grab the right side of subframe (or passenger peg)
- have helper try to rotate wheel.
Or pull clutch cover ........

DEcosse,
I did that and had my wife try to turn the wheel, she's little but strong enough and couldn't get the wheel to turn. So... lucky me, I have a seized engine... now what? Is it engine rebuild time, new engine time, or what? Thanks again,
Jim
