what happened? (Laid it over today)

One minute I'm taking a moderate speed right hand turn on the back road on my way home - the same turn I've taken a million times - The next minute me and T595 are sliding down the road until we finally end up on the opposite shoulder in the middle of an ant hill. I just don't know what happened, I've taken that turn a million times, wasn't speeding, rolled on the throttle, looked through the turn, same way I've done it dozens of times. Its like it just slid out from under me.

Damage:

Of course the entire right side plastic is scraped to hell, and the rear plastic on the right side and the seat cowling as well. My right rear view mirror must be back on the road somewhere. The rear brake pedal is ground down to practically nothing and the foot guard and the assembly its part of is bent at a weird angle now. My carbon muffler looks like it got some scrapes and It also idles like crap now, stalls out and is basically just running crappy.

Fortunately I was wearing leather boots, gloves, jeans, and a leather riding jacket. My boots and jacket have a little more 'character' now and my jeans have holes in both knees. Overall I'm glad I was able to get back up relatively unscathed and ride home.

My ego has taken a beating though. I'm a mature rider and I don't ride like a kook. I'm just dumbfounded and really disappointed with myself. What could have caused me to go down like that?

I have a full coverage policy from GEICO and just filed a claim. Anyone else that has GEICO and would like to let me know what to expect from here I would appreciate it!

thanks!

Just good to hear you are OK.

Nothing more frustrating than coming off and not being able to immediately identify the cause. It is worth going back to check out the road surface again..

If it's a familiar piece of road, ridden in the usual way, then save for a bike-related/mechanical issue, or bad weather, it HAS to be road/surface related!

Go check it out, ASAP and take a digital camera and metal rule/calibrated scale with you to substantiate any subsequent claims related to poor surface conditions (pot holes, diesel spill, iffy overbanding, etc).

Good luck!

K S, Glad you're well enough to write about it. How are you feeling today? RHS of your tires may give you a clue if there's any odd markings.

10:1 GEICO will total it out. You'll probably have the option to buy back.

Thanks folks for all your comments and well wishes! I'm going to go back to the scene this afternoon and try figure out what happened.

Thimking back my recollection is I was leaned over with a lot of lean angle left, I'm rolling on the throttle thru the turn, and all of a sudden it just fell over and I'm sliding across the road.

I'm feeling relatively fine today, scrapes on my knees and legs are sore, and it feels like I must have bruised my ribs, because my right torso is tender and stiff. I also find myself popping the little white pustules on my skin from all the dang ant bites I got from ending up in the anthill on the side of the road.

What does that mean for me if GEICO 'totals' the bike? My deductible is $500 FWIW.

thanks!

Buy back is usually 20 % of the bike's value. If you don't want to buy it personally, there are a slew of people on here that would enjoy a track bike. Since your value is not going to be high because of the bike's age, the buy back will likely be 500-1200...

It can be street-fightered, pieced together, or turned into a track bike. A salvage title can be turned into a R title or a street legal salvage, I forget how to in Florida.

The running like crap could be a few things. Idle control circuit hose or wiring, airbox full of oil, etc. etc. etc.

That bike, even if totalled, sounds like it should be straight, and therefore still a usable means of transport at least.

K S, If the cost of repair reaches or exceeds the value of the bike there is a 'total loss', the insurance company can opt to pay you the value of the bike and you surrender it to the insurance company. The buy back option is attractive in that the insurance company gives you less money, but you keep the bike.

The buy back option is popular because you have a bike with a known history. The settlement amount has often been quite close to repair (and some upgrading) costs providing there's just cosmetic/small bits damage for those I know that've taken this option.
