Fuel vapour leak

Hi everyone, new to this site and already I have a problem! I went to get my '06 Daytona 955i out of the garage yesterday and noticed that the paint around the fuel filler cap was all bistered and flakey. There was a strong smell of petrol and there was a stain down the side of the tank.

The bike hasn't been used much during the English winter, maybe once a month, but it has been started every week. I last ran it about a week ago and it was fine then.

I initially though that something had been spilt on it, but there is nothing that could have been split or dripped from anywhere. When I got back from the ride, the strong smell of petrol was still there. I rinsed the paintwork on the tank to prevent any further damage and it seemed as if the water was leaking into the tank through the filler cap.

I wonder if there is a problem with the seal on the cap or a breather pipe?

Any help would be very welcome!
thanks
Tim

If anyone's interested....

There are two pipes from the tank, they exit on the left side and usually appear near the bottom of the fairing by the side-stand. One is an overflow pipe in case you over-fill the tank and the other is a breather pipe. The breather has a one way valve fitted.
My problem was that both pipes had problems.

When fuel was being forced out around the filler cap, I suspected it was one of the pipes. The overflow turned out to be blocked with crud. A quick blast with an air line cured that. But the next day i noticed fuel leaking from that pipe. A lot of fuel. Around half a pint overnight. I couldn't work out why fuel was coming out of this pipe when the tank wasn't full and the pipe wasn't blocked.

It turned out that the one-way valve in the breather pipe was faulty - this meant that air wasn't getting onto the tank to replace the fuel that was used. Pressure built up in the tank and forced it through the filler cap until I unblocked the overflow - now it could blow the fuel out there. Removed the one-way valve and no more problems.
